    Abstract: The well reference apparatus and method of the present invention includes a reference member preferably permanently installed within the borehole at a preferred depth and orientation in one trip into the well. The reference member provides a permanent reference for the location of all operations, particularly in a multi-lateral well. The assembly of the present invention includes disposing the reference member on the end of a pipe string. An orienting tool such as an MWD collar is disposed in the pipe string above the reference member. This assembly is lowered into the borehole on the pipe string. Once the preferred depth is attained, the MWD is activated to determine the orientation of the reference member. If the reference member is not oriented in the preferred direction, the pipe string is rotated to align the reference member in the preferred direction. This process is repeated for further corrective action and to verify the proper orientation of the reference member.

    Abstract: An improved float valve according to the present invention includes a packer 10 for positioning within a joint of the casing C while at the surface of the well, the packer including a float valve receptacle therein for at least partially receiving a float valve. The float valve body includes a valve seat 56 and a valve member 54 is positioned for selective engagement and disengagement with the valve seat. A guide nose 58 may be optionally provided for positioning within the casing joint between the valve body and the pin end of the casing joint. The float valve body may be reliably fixed and sealed to the packer body. After the packer setting operation, the casing joint and the packer and the float valve may then be positioned as an assembly within the well.

    Abstract: A downhole apparatus and method for depositing metal at a desired area in a well casing. In one embodiment the apparatus comprises an oxygen tank filled with oxygen, a fuel tank filled with fuel, and a metal depositing device. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, may be supplied to dampen the heat generated by the metal depositing device. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus comprises a gas tank with nitrous oxide therein and a sparking device to initiate a decomposition reaction to separate the nitrous oxide into its oxygen and nitrogen components. The metal depositing device may be adapted for flame spraying, plasma spraying or welding. A steering head is provided to reciprocate and rotate the apparatus so that the metal depositing device may be directed to the desired area in the casing. A camera and light are disposed at the bottom of the apparatus so that the interior of a well casing is illuminated and an image is transmitted to the operator for proper actuation of the steering sub.

    Abstract: An improved abrasive slurry delivery apparatus and associated method of using same that permits repeated and/or extended use of the apparatus in a subterranean wellbore, and reduces abrasive wear during fracturing operations while increasing pump rate and proppant mass delivery capabilities. In a preferred embodiment, an abrasive slurry delivery apparatus has a tubular crossover member with an internal flow passage and sidewall outlet openings formed with or without removable inserts formed from abrasive resistant materials. The internal flow passage is eccentrically offset to enlarge the effective flow cross-section, provide for tool passage clearance and to increase wall thickness for protection of a return flow passageway. The sidewall opening is positioned such that the opening is isolated from the secondary flow passageway.

    Abstract: A method for controlling a subsea well that includes shutting at least one blowout preventer, opening at least one isolation line, and circulating an influx out of a well while an inlet pressure of a subsea mudlift pump is adjusted to maintain a substantially constant drill pipe pressure at an initial circulating pressure. After the influx is circulated out of the well, drilling mud with a kill mud weight is pumped into the well. The drill pipe pressure is reduced according to a preselected drill pipe pressure decline schedule until the kill mud weight drilling mud reaches the bottom of the well. The drill pipe pressure is then maintained at a final circulating pressure by adjusting the inlet pressure of the subsea mudlift pump. The kill mud weight drilling mud is then circulated from the well bottom to the surface at the final circulating pressure.

    Abstract: A down hole cleaning assembly and method of cleaning a tubular. Generally, the down hole assembly is connected to a work string concentrically located within a casing string. In one embodiment, the down hole assembly comprises a mandrel operatively connected to the work string, with the mandrel having an opening therein. A pad member is received within the opening, with the pad member having a groove formed therein. Also provided is a wire brush member, operatively positioned within the groove of the pad member, for cleaning the internal diameter of the casing string. The pad member and groove may be helical, with the wire brush member positioned within the groove. The down hole assembly further comprises a biasing member, operatively positioned between the mandrel and the pad member, adapted for biasing the wire brush means against the inner diameter of the well bore.

The work string descends with a coaxially combined completion string and service string. The completion string is set into a previously set basement packer. The completion string includes a series of production screens, transverse flow orifices, isolation packers and collet indicating couplings, all prepositioned along the completion string length relative to the basement packer set location. The production sleeves and transverse flow orifices are selectively closed by axially sliding sleeves. The service string includes a crossover flow tool, a SMART collet tool, sleeve shifting tools and sleeve closing tools. With all orifice and screen closure sleeves closed, the procedure proceeds from the lowermost production zone to open the closure sleeves respective to the flow orifice and screens dedicated to a respective production zone.

The hydraulic deployment of the drill bit is self aligning and does not require complex alignment steps to ensure the maximum cutting efficiency and lifetime of the bit. The same apparatus that can be used to drive and deploy the drill bit can also be adapted to receive and lift the as-cut core specimen from the newly created hole in the substrate. Once lifted, the received specimen can be positioned out of the work area so that work within the newly created circular hole can progress.
