  • Patent number: 6735461
Abstract: Systems and methods for performing a focused ultrasound procedure monitored using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is provided. An MRI system uses a timing sequence for transmitting radio frequency (RF) signals and detecting magnetic resonance (MR) response signals from a patient's body in response to the RF pulse sequences. A piezoelectric transducer is driven with drive signals such that the transducer emits acoustic energy towards a target tissue region within the patient's body. Parameters of the drive signals are changed at times during the timing sequence that minimize interference with the MRI system detecting MR response signals, e.g., during transmission of RF signals by the MRI system.

  • Patent number: 6692450
Abstract: A focused ultrasound ablation device includes an ultrasound emitting member having a plurality of individual ultrasound emitting elements arranged in an array. The ultrasound emitting elements are selectively, independently actuatable to emit ultrasound energy and focus the emitted ultrasound energy a predetermined distance from the ultrasound emitting member such that the ultrasound energy is focused within anatomical tissue adjacent which the ultrasound emitting member is positioned. The anatomical tissue is heated by the focused ultrasound energy to form a lesion in the tissue of desired size and/or surface configuration.

  • Patent number: 6628978
Abstract: In the present invention, when measuring magnetism of a measuring portion of a patient by making use of a dewar incorporating magnetism sensors each including a super conducting quantum interference device, a bed is at first positioned outside a position immediately below the dewar. At this position outside the position immediately below the dewar the patient is laid on the bed in an inspection posture. Marks are attached on the body of the patient at three points for setting X and Y axis coordinate on the measurement portion, at the position outside the position immediately below the dewar cross shaped beam patterns are projected and the position of the bed is adjusted so that the marks at the three points locate on the cross shaped beam patterns, thereafter, bed is transferred by a constant amount to the position immediately below the dewar.

  • Patent number: 6626855
Abstract: An ultrasound system used for both imaging and delivery high intensity ultrasound energy therapy to treatment sites and a method for treating tumors and other undesired tissue within a patient's body with an ultrasound device. The ultrasound device has an ultrasound transducer array disposed on a distal end of an elongate, relatively thin shaft. In one form of the invention, the transducer array is disposed within a liquid-filled elastomeric material that more effectively couples ultrasound energy into the tumor, that is directly contacted with the device. Using the device in a continuous wave mode, a necrotic zone of tissue having a desired size and shape (e.g., a necrotic volume selected to interrupt a blood supply to a tumor) can be created by controlling at least one of the f-number, duration, intensity, and direction of the ultrasound energy administered. This method speeds the therapy and avoids continuously pausing to enable intervening normal tissue to cool.

  • Patent number: 6556858
Abstract: An imaging system illuminates body tissue with infrared light to enhance visibility of subcutaneous blood vessels, and generates a video image of the body tissue and the subcutaneous blood vessels based on reflected infrared light. The system includes an infrared light source for generating the infrared light and a structure for diffusing the infrared light. The diffusing structure has an input aperture for receiving the infrared light from the infrared light source, and multiple interior reflecting surfaces. The reflecting surfaces reflect the infrared light multiple times and in multiple directions, thereby producing diffuse infrared light. The diffusing structure also has an output aperture for receiving the diffuse infrared light reflected from the plurality of reflecting surfaces and for emitting the diffuse infrared light toward the body tissue.

  • Patent number: 6480732
Abstract: First and second volume data are collected in advance for the same region of a human body under examination. By performing volume rendering along the set direction of line of sight, a composite image of a first three-dimensional image based on the first volume data and a second three-dimensional image based on the second volume data is produced. The volume rendering is performed taking into consideration whether the trimming of the front region has been specified or not. In the volume rendering, by setting the initial position of a point of interest on the plane of projection or on the plane section indicated by a depth map according to whether the trimming of the front region has been specified or not, a three-dimension imaging region is varied. When the trimming of the front region has been specified, the initial position of the point of interest is set on the plane of projection.

  • Patent number: 6466815
Abstract: A navigation apparatus comprises a navigation-related information generating section and a display section. The navigation-related information generating section measures the position and orientation of an object and a target in a three-dimensional space and generate navigation-related information to be used for navigating the object toward the target. The display section displays the navigation-related information generated by the navigation-related information generating section in any of different modes depending on the relationship of the position and orientation of the object and that of the target. A surgical operation image acquisition/display apparatus comprises an observation section, an image display section and a specifying section. The observation section includes a plurality of observation sections whose position and orientation is modifiable.
