Patent number: 5123017Abstract: A remote maintenance monitoring system retrofits to a given hardware device with a sensor implant which gathers and captures failure data from the hardware device, without interfering with its operation. Failure data is continuously obtained from predetermined critical points within the hardware device, and is analyzed with a diagnostic expert system, which isolates failure origin to a particular component within the hardware device. For example, monitoring of a computer-based device may include monitoring of parity error data therefrom, as well as monitoring power supply fluctuations therein, so that parity error and power supply anomaly data may be used to trace the failure origin to a particular plane or power supply within the computer-based device. A plurality of sensor implants may be rerofit to corresponding plural devices comprising a distributed large-scale system. Transparent interface of the sensors to the devices precludes operative interference with the distributed network.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1989Date of Patent: June 16, 1992Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Lorenz G. Patent number: 5117353Abstract: Application of computing equipment to temporary help businesses, particularly for scheduling personnel suited to particular tasks for work on a temporary basis. Temporary help applicants are screened and their particular skills matched to client job orders, allowing clients to access the system directly. The system monitors jobs in progress, schedules work, and trains temporary help workers. The system also allows for "stacking jobs" to provide an incentive to temporary help workers to remain employed by a single temporary help business.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1989Date of Patent: May 26, 1992Assignee: Staff-Plus, Inc.Inventors: Joseph Stipanovich, Sharon Bredeson

Patent number: 5111396Abstract: Portable, two-way ECG data-storage apparatus for the selective window-capturing of successive plural-lead ECG data records. The apparatus receives its information from the analogue output terminals in a conventional ECG machine, and operates a store multiple-lead data in flagged time-windowed fashion in order to assure stable signal information and efficient meory use. Playback can occur either directly in an analogue manner back to any selected ECG machine, and/or audibly for listening to by a user or for transtelephonic transmission.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1989Date of Patent: May 5, 1992Assignee: Instromedix, Inc.Inventors: Gary N. Mills, Habib Homayoun, Herbert J. Semler

Patent number: 5111392Abstract: A process for designing an arrangement of furniture pieces from a predetermined system of furniture. The process can be initiated by selecting a predetermined thought starter shape or can be started by designing a beginning shape by selecting furniture element shapes from the system of furniture and combining them to form a basic shape. Once the basic shape has been selected, it can be modified, expanded, contracted, and replicated as desired within implementable increments consistent with the system of furniture. The program highlights where storage, privacy and electrical elements can be placed. At any time the finish, color, and fabric to be used can be determined. An updated cost and bill of materials is provided on the completion of each step of the design process including color, fabric and finishes.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1989Date of Patent: May 5, 1992Assignee: Steelcase Inc.Inventor: Stuart B. Malin

Patent number: 5107500Abstract: A diagnostic expert system is set up with a first diagnostic subsystem based on a maintenance technician's knowledge and a second diagnostic subsystem based on a design engineer's knowledge. If a fault cannot be located under the first diagnostic subsystem, the second diagnostic subsystem, which operates by using the result obtained from the first diagnostic subsystem is started so as to determine the location of the fault.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1989Date of Patent: April 21, 1992Assignee: Fujitsu Ltd.Inventors: Masaaki Wakamoto, Moo W. Patent number: 5077741Abstract: A method comprising distributing channel coding on either side of a limited capacity communication path by partially channel coding a signal at a first processing point and communicating the partially coded signal over the communication path to a second processing point. The partially coded signal comprises at least some but not all of the necessary coded bits. The channel coding algorithm is completed at the second processing point using the communicated partially coded signal thereby increasing throughput over the limited capacity path while minimizing added delays.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1989Date of Patent: December 31, 1991Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventor: Michael D. Patent number: 5067130Abstract: A logic analyzer stores the activity around the last in a series of triggering events while also storing the activity around several other triggering events immediately preceding the last trigger. The acquisition memory is first positioned into a number, N, of memory sections and the trigger condition of interest is defined. Then repeated acquistions are performed using this same trigger condition. At first, data from each of these acquisitions is stored in each one of the number of memory sections. When all of the memory sections have been filled once, if the trigger condition is still occurring, the acquisition memories are reused in the same order in which they were originally used as many times as necessary until it is ascertained that the trigger condition is no longer occurring or some external conditon has changed, at which time the logic analyzer is stopped. One of the memory sections then contains the data that occurred in the vicinity of the last trigger.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1989Date of Patent: November 19, 1991Assignee: Tektronix, Inc.Inventor: Ronald M.
