  • Patent number: 7240911
Abstract: A valve system controls which air bags on a tractor trailer are in fluid communication with a pressurized air supply source. If one of the air bags develops a leak, an air bag may be taken out of fluid communication with the remaining air bags and pressurized air source. A pressure gauge monitors the air pressure within the valve system and air bags. A dump valve allows the air pressure within the system to be decreased.

  • Patent number: 7234707
Abstract: An Active Roll Control System for a motor vehicle that utilizes small valves to control large flows. Flow is supplied by a hydraulic pump which is powered in some fashion by the motor vehicle. Flow is directed to the actuators by a three-position-four-way valve that is controlled by two pairs of small ABS style solenoid valves. This allows for a minimum of power to be supplied by the vehicle to operate the system. Also, this valve arrangement allows a desirable failure mode whereby hydraulic fluid is locked into the hydraulic actuators, there by locking in the anti-roll bar in case of a system failure.

  • Patent number: 7226083
Abstract: The subject invention provides a collapsible steering column assembly. The assembly includes a support for attachment to a vehicle. A steering column is movably supported by the support. An energy absorbing mechanism interconnects the steering column and the support for absorbing energy in response to the steering column moving relative to the support during a collision. The energy absorbing mechanism includes a elongated element and a brake for variably resisting the movement of the elongated element and absorbing the energy during the collision. The elongated element, in combination with the brake, is capable of adjustment to absorb energy at forces of various magnitude such that a universal energy absorbing device may be installed on each type of vehicle. Furthermore, the elongated element retains structural integrity after absorbing the energy and need not be replaced.

  • Patent number: 7226078
Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus for use in an airbag inflation system are disclosed. An explosively formable projectile piece is positioned adjacent to an opening and, upon deployment of an initiator, is forced through the opening, thereby changing the shape of the projectile piece. The projectile piece is projected towards a rupturable wall. Once the projectile piece has ruptured the wall, the airbag inflation gas can pass through the opening in the wall and inflate the airbag.

  • Patent number: 7222690
Abstract: When a variation amount of a driving operation falls outside of a determining reference, a determining system determines that an awakening degree of a driver is decreased. The determining system changes the determining reference by whether or not a preceding vehicle is existing within a given distance. Therefore, in consideration of peripheral traffic environments such as existence and absence of the preceding vehicle, the awakening degree of the driver is determined, so that determining accuracy of the awakening degree is enhanced more than that of a conventional method.

  • Patent number: 7210551
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for operating a level control system of a motor vehicle which includes: a control apparatus, sensors for the direct or indirect determination of the distance of the vehicle chassis to the axles of the vehicle wheels; and, actuators for adjusting the distance of the vehicle chassis to these wheel axles. In the method, the control apparatus checks in a desired-actual comparison based on determined measured values whether the inclination of the vehicle chassis exceeds predetermined limit values. When these limit values are exceeded, one or several of the actuators are actuated in order to obtain a level compensation in the sense of a horizontal alignment of the vehicle chassis. To avoid a turnover of the vehicle (1) in an operating situation on a slope (2), the level compensating control activity is prevented by the control apparatus when the vehicle (1) is disposed in a slope and slant position (angles ?, ?) which is impermissible for vehicle safety.

  • Patent number: 7210701
Abstract: The invention relates to an airbag system for a motor vehicle, comprising at least one inflatable airbag for protecting passengers. The aim of the invention is to influence, in different ways, the direction of expansion and depth of an airbag, irrespective of the cut of the airbag and irrespective of the course of the stitches of the airbag. According to the invention, at least one supplementary airbag is associated with a main airbag. Said supplementary airbag has a lower volume in order to increase the depth of deployment and/or to alter the direction of deployment of the main airbag.

  • Patent number: 7207597
Abstract: When a gas generating agent 9a inside a first combustion chamber 5a is burnt, a gas generating agent 9b is prevented from being burnt by function of a metal thin plate 11 closing a communication hole 10 with a second combustion chamber 5b. A cup 1190 having a hole 1191 is covered on an igniter 1112, and the flame thereof advances into a transfer charge 1116 straightly in a narrow width. Accordingly, since the transfer charge 1116 is burnt completely, sufficient flame for burning a gas generating agent 1109 can be generated securely. A communication hole 3010 between a first combustion chamber 3005a and a second combustion chamber 3005b is closed by double-layered seal tape 3011 laminated through an adhesive layer. After activation, the seal tapes 3011 are not ruptured due to increase in the internal pressure of the first combustion chamber 3005a, but they are peeled off easily due to increase in the internal pressure of the second combustion chamber 3005b.

  • Patent number: 7207595
Abstract: A side airbag apparatus includes an airbag, an inflator and a limited thickness portion. The inflator supplies gas to the airbag. When the airbag is inflated and deployed, the limited thickness portion limits the inflation of the airbag such that the thickness of a portion of the airbag corresponding to an elbow portion of an occupant on the seat is less than the thickness of the remainder of the airbag with respect to the measurement between the occupant and the body side portion. The airbag includes an inflation portion that entirely surrounds the limited thickness portion and is inflated with gas from the inflator. This prevents an elbow portion of the occupant from receiving an excessive force directed laterally inward.

  • Patent number: RE39629
Abstract: A side air bag expands near a window at a time of collision of a vehicle to restrain an occupant from moving in a lateral direction. The air bag has an expansion duration protracted which is extended to constrain the occupant during overturning of the vehicle. Stowability for stowing the air bag in a folded state in a side structure of the vehicle, such as a pillar and a roof side rail portion, is enhanced in that two woven fabrics are connected along an outer peripheral portion, to form a bag portion, by a textile structure woven using a common yarn include in of both fabrics fabric sheets forming opposing sides of the air bag. A whole of the bag portion is coated and sealed by an air non-permeable impermeable coating material to improve air tightness.
