    Abstract: A device for reliably and non-invasively measuring respiration rates and effort by encircling the patient's chest with a device having a large section of inelastic belt attached to a small section of elastic material. The elastic material having two magnetic tapes with wire windings thereon proximate each other with an insulation material therebetween. The wire windings are electrically connected to each other. The magnetic tapes have opposite ends attached to the elastic material such that when the elastic material expands and contracts the wire windings move relative to each. A toroidal transformer is connected to the wire windings. When a carrier signal is introduced to the transformer and the magnetic tapes move relative to each other on the elastic material when the patient breathes a mutual inductance in the wire windings modulates the carrier signal and thus measures the expansion and contraction of the patient's chest which is directly related to the patient's respiration rate.

The reusable introducer includes a catheter with a proximal end portion thereof carrying the heater. The disposable bladder subassembly includes a distendable balloon that terminates in a hollow, elongated rigid sleeve. A contact seal exists between the disposable balloon and the introducer. The device is especially well suited for effecting necrosis of substantially all of the tissue lining human uterus, and is specifically configured for intrauterine use.

    Abstract: A heated fluid surgical instrument including a palm-sized handpiece having a cannula adapted to be inserted into a patient's body by way of a natural access (e.g., mouth) or a small incision. A channel is provided within the handpiece and the cannula for permitting the passage of a surgical accessory implement to the surgical site. Additional, channels are provided for passing fluid pumped into the handpiece from a remote fluid source to the surgical site. An irrigation control valve assembly on the handpiece permits a surgeon to selectively direct the flow of fluid through the handpiece and into one of two fluid flow paths. One of the paths heats the fluid and passes it to the surgical site to effect a therapeutic result. The other path sends the fluid directly to the surgical site.

In a second display element, the data for inspiration and expiration are shown individually in a second time scale that is time-expanded relative to the first time scale.

The ventilator includes a gas flow calibration member having a reader component for recording inspiratory and exhalation gas volume with exhalation time, and for measuring a plurality of incremental exhalation gas flow values in a plurality of incremental time periods during a single exhalation. The gas flow calibration member includes a composite calculator component for determining an average of consecutive composite flow values, and a scanner calculator component for scanning in reverse order the plurality of consecutive composite flow values and calculating a new flow calibration value where a preselected number of consecutive composite flow values fall within a pre-selected flow rate. Thereafter, the gas delivery member is calibrated in accord with the determined new flow calibration value.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for propagating microwave energy into heart tissues to produce a desired temperature profile therein at tissue depths sufficient for thermally ablating arrhythmogenic cardiac tissue to treat ventricular tachycardia and other arrhythmias while preventing excessive heating of surrounding tissues, organs, and blood. A wide bandwidth double-disk antenna (700) is effective for this purpose over a bandwidth of about six gigahertz. A computer simulation provides initial screening capabilities for an antenna such as antenna, frequency, power level, and power application duration. The simulation also allows optimization of techniques for specific patients or conditions. In operation, microwave energy between about 1 Gigahertz and 12 Gigahertz is applied to monopole microwave radiator (600) having a surface wave limiter (606).

    Abstract: A cold therapy pad includes a flexible envelope containing a high thermal capacity gel which will remain cold for a period of time after being frozen and a flexible permanent magnet contained within the envelope. According to a presently preferred embodiment, the envelope is made of a flexible polymer such as vinyl, the thermal gel is made of silicate, and the permanent magnet is made of molten metal hardened in an electric field. The magnet may be embedded in the gel so that it is substantially centrally located relative to the envelope. If desired, the magnet may be located between the envelope and the gel. The basic construction of the invention lends itself to many geometric configurations and sizes. In different embodiments, the therapy pad is dimensioned to overlie particular body parts such as joints, limbs, the neck, the waist, the chest, and the eyes. In some embodiments VELCRO.RTM. strips are provided to affix the therapy pad to a body part.

    Abstract: The hematocrit of blood (i.e., the percentage of whole blood volume occupied by red blood cells) perfusing a finger is determined by stimulating the finger with two current frequencies, one relatively high (e.g., 10 MHZ) and the other relatively low (e.g., 100 KHz). Voltages induced in the finger in response to the two current frequencies are then captured and separated into baseline and pulsatile components. The hematocrit is determined as a function of the ratio of the high frequency pulsatile component to the low frequency pulsatile component, multiplied by the ratio of the square of the low frequency baseline component to the square of the high frequency baseline component. The signal-to-noise ratio of the captured voltages can be enhanced by the application of external pressure to the finger, such as by applying a pressure cuff to the finger.

The article comprises a pad having an upper outer layer, a lower outer layer, and an intermediate pH-responsive component. A double-sided adhesive strip is attached to the lower outer layer. The upper outer layer is composed of a liquid permeable material. Intermediate of the upper out layer and the inner outer layer is a pH-sensitive component. This intermediate layer is a pH-sensitive material and may be one of a variety of such materials, although a preferred material is nitrazine paper. In the presence of an alkaline fluid, such as amniotic fluid, the pH-sensitive material responds by turning to a purple-blue color. The change in color acts as a visual indicator to the wearer of the possible presence of amniotic fluid outside of the amniotic sac.

The reduced temperature applied to the zones of the support surface removes heat from the weight-bearing areas, thereby reducing the risk of injury to tissue in those areas.

    Abstract: An externally guidable intervertebral disc apparatus manipulates disc tissue at a selected location of an intervertebral disc. The apparatus comprises a catheter having a distal end, a proximal end and a longitudinal axis. The catheter has an intradiscal section at its distal end. The intradiscal section is extendible into the disc, has sufficient rigidity to be advanceable through the nucleus pulposus and around the annulus fibrosus of the disc under a force applied longitudinally to the proximal end, has sufficient flexibility in a direction of the disc plane to be compliant with the inner wall, and has insufficient penetration ability to be advanceable out through the annulus fibrosus under the applied force. A thermal energy delivery device is located in the intradiscal section for preferentially heating the selected location of the disc. The apparatus is used to locally and controllably heat but not char or burn tissue in a disc. Such heat shrinks the collagen component.

Pads according to the present invention feature distinct members each of which corresponds to and may be applied to conform to a limb or body part surrounding the knee, shoulder and other joints. The pads connect these members using at least one conduit that is not substantially centered on the kneecap or top of the shoulder when they are applied for thermal therapy on the knee or shoulder, respectively. The pads thus do not blindly adhere to traditional multijoint notions of symmetry, but instead opt for increased flexibility, prevention of undesired blockage or occlusion during joint flexure and restriction of range of motion.

A flow-directed catheter is utilized to transduce the pressure waveform, which is then input to the processing computer through a analog-to-digital data acquisition board. The data is preprocessed in the computer in order to present the neural network with 11 samples of blood pressure data and 11 samples of time-correlated first derivatives of the blood pressure data as well as an indication of the length in time of the heartbeat. The trained neural network then directly outputs the estimated wedge pressure.
