  • Patent number: 5268452
Abstract: Unsaturated polyester resins of the type already having reactive liquid polymers reacted into the backbone of the resins, are cured in the presence of a reactive liquid polymer additive admixed with the prereacted unsaturated polyester resin. Heating of this system during cure causes the reactive liquid polymer additive to miscibilize with the unsaturated polyester resin. The unsaturated polyester resin modified in the manner described above shows a significant enhancement in toughness as measured by fracture energy over unmodified counterparts or counterparts modified by known methods of adduction or admixing alone.

  • Patent number: 5138024
Abstract: A copolyester is synthesized by reacting a dialkyl ester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g., dimethyl terephthalate) with ethylene glycol, low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) and a salt of a sulfonic acid-substituted aromatic dicarboxylate (e.g., sodium sulfoisophthalic acid) simultaneously in a first stage reaction in the presence of a phosphite or phosphate stabilizer. The intermediate product of the first stage is further reacted in a second stage in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst to obtain a random copolyester of the desired molecular weight. The copolyester is extruded to form a film which, after orientation and heat setting, has excellent clarity and is useful as a photographic film support. Aqueous processing of the film relaxes any core set or curl.

  • Patent number: RE34296
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydrophilic membranes by coagulation of a solution of at least one hydrophobic polymer and at least one hydrophilic polymer in a suitable solvent medium in a coagulation medium. The process according to the invention is characterized in that hydrophilic microfiltration and/or ultrafiltration membranes are prepared by cross-linking the hydrophilic polymer which is present in or on the obtained membrane matrix after the coagulation in an essentially non-swollen state and fixing same as such in or on the polymer matrix. Advantageously the solvents and the undesirable components of the coagulation medium are removed whereby the hydrophilic polymer is converted into an essentially non-swollen state prior to cross-linking. The removal of the undesirable components from the membrane takes place by means of a non-solvent for the hydrophilic polymer according to the invention.
