Patent number: 5009136Abstract: A centerless turning machine for rods. The machine includes a cutter-head mounted at the front end of a rotating hollow shaft, and further includes a plurality of advancing rollers of an infeed device operatively mounted at the inlet end of the turning machine. The turning machine further includes a front guide mechanism and a rear guide mechanism, respectively mounted on opposite sides of the cutter head, and also includes a clamping carriage which is mounted on the outlet side of the turning machine. The rear guide mechanism takes the form of a tubular support which is provided with a flange mounted in the machine housing and which extends into the rotating hollow shaft. The rear guide mechanism has, at its free end, which protrudes into the hollow shaft, three individually spring biased guide elements for the rod. The springs for each individual guide element form a first resilient abutment for each guide element. The movements of the three guide elements are synchronized by a rotatable ring.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1989Date of Patent: April 23, 1991Assignee: Th. Patent number: 4979849Abstract: A forming tool for generating a predetermined configuration in a rotating metal workpiece includes a tool body having a shelf formed thereon, a shim on the shelf, a cutting insert having a cutting edge on the shim and a clamp assembly for clamping the insert and the shim on the tool body. The clamp assembly includes a clamp member having top and bottom sides, and a pair of screws for securing the clamp member on the tool body. The clamp member has a pair of substantially parallel elongated front and rear clamping pads formed on the bottom side thereof and it is mounted so that one of the clamping pads is supported on the tool body whereas the other clamping pad engages the insert to secure it on the tool body. The clamp member has an arcuate crown formed on the top side thereof which is oriented so that the apex thereof is substantially parallel to the clamping pads.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1989Date of Patent: December 25, 1990Assignee: Precision Industries, Inc.Inventor: Mitchell Kezran

Patent number: 4972912Abstract: A diamond cutter consisting of a polycrystalline diamond layer sintered to a cylindrically shaped tungsten carbide substrate is brazed to a cylindrically shaped mounting surface formed at a cutting end of a tungsten carbide insert body. The cylindrically shaped mounting surface of the insert body is the same diameter as the tungsten carbide substrate hence no fillet of braze material can form adjacent the juncture between the substrate and the insert body at the cutting end of the insert thereby minimizing the damaging affect of a leaching process that forms microvoids or cracks in the insert body.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1989Date of Patent: November 27, 1990Assignee: Smith International, Inc.Inventor: Madapusi K. Patent number: 4973204Abstract: A cutting insert, especially for turning tools, comprising an insert body having a transverse front cutting edge portion and a rear portion for mounting on and clamping to an insert holder, a cutting surface which connects with said cutting edge being provided with a central chip-forming recess. The novelty of the invention resides in that the chip-forming recess has a concave bottom surface which connects with the transverse cutting edge and with the rest of the cutting surface at a distance from said cutting edge, and that said recess is laterally restricted by inclined, convex sides having a curvature and shape relative to the concave bottom surface such that the bottom surface width at first decreases, as seen in the direction away from the cutting edge and backwards, and then increases again.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1990Date of Patent: November 27, 1990Inventor: Wlajko Mihic

Patent number: 4967625Abstract: In one embodiment an adjustable jaw socket with a gripping facility is disclosed that is adapted for use with a socket wrench or other tool for providing rotary motion. The adjustable jaw socket includes a body with a stationary jaw and slotted members in its upper portion and an aperture for receiving the drive of ratchet wrench or other socket-type wrench in its lower portion, in addition to an adjustable jaw. Means are provided for securing the movable adjustable jaw at a selected position with respect to the body. Also, means responsive to rotary motion of an attached socket-type wrench to grip a nut or bolt for loosening and tightening operations is provided.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1989Date of Patent: November 6, 1990Assignees: James W.
