  • Patent number: 6055408
Abstract: A printer for printing endless paper webs on both sides has two printing stations with a web turnover station therebetween. The paper web is fed in parallel side-by-side to the two printing stations which are on the same rollers. The drive of the web through the printer is by a positive drive, using pins to engage holes in the paper web, for example, into the first printing station. The drive of the paper web thereafter is by friction drive to permit slippage in the drive to compensate for variations in paper length during heating, etc. The slippage is controlled by brakes or other drag inducing devices acting on one or both of the two portions of the paper web.

  • Patent number: 6032014
Abstract: A plurality of electrostatic images are formed on a moving tensioned belt formed with an electrically conductive base having a non-conductive image-carrying surface layer. The images are developed by passing the belt through toner development stations, each of which includes a development unit including a magnetic roller and a backing member, in opposed position to the magnetic roller, over which the belt passes. Under non-ideal conditions, the image quality in terms of image density and uniformity of image density and rendition of sharp image transitions, is substantially improved by applying an alternating electrical field between the magnetic roller and the belt, with a peak-to-peak voltage greater than 800 volts.

  • Patent number: 5956541
Abstract: An image forming apparatus has an image bearing member, a developing agent image formed on the image bearing member, and transferring device for transferring the developing agent image onto a recording member. The image bearing member is cleaned, and the developing agent removed therefrom is stored in a container. A detection is performed as to whether or not the quantity of developing agent in the container has reached a predetermined state, and once the result of such detection becomes positive, the number of prints made thereafter is counted. The result of the detection and the result of the count are stored in a memory along with the container, and the image forming operation is controlled in accordance with the stored information. In another embodiment, the memory is stored in an attachable cartridge. The attachable cartridge has an image bearing member, a charger, a developing device, and a cleaning device.

  • Patent number: 5946523
Abstract: A toner developing quantity detection unit operates a plurality of electrostatic recording units to transfer Y, M, C and K color component toner marks onto a belt. A toner developing quantity correction unit detects toner developing quantities per unit area of color toners on the basis of detection signals of the color component toner marks on the belt optically detected by a sensor. The toner developing quantity correction unit corrects the toner developing quantities so as to allow the toner consuming quantities of the plurality of electrostatic recording units to be substantially the same level, on the basis of the thus detected toner developing quantities.

  • Patent number: 5930577
Abstract: Registering a first image on a first side of a substrate with a second image on a second side. A motor driven document transport advances a substrate to a transfer station that transfers the first image onto the substrate. The substrate is then inverted and the document transport moves the inverted substrate back to the transfer station to receive a second image. A sensor detects a leading edge and a trailing edge of the substrate, while an encoder operatively connected to the motor produces a predetermined number of pulses per revolution. A counter counts the number of encoder pulses between the leading edge and the trailing edge. The controller then determines the width of the substrate from the number of counted encoder pulses and from the distance the substrate advances per encoder pulse. The controller then controls the document transport to position the substrate at the transfer station such that the second image is registered with the first image.
