  • Patent number: 4728501
Abstract: A liquid sampling apparatus for adjusting the amount of sampled fluid drawn into a cylinder. A carriage reciprocates vertically and drives a rod inclined at an acute angle to the vertical direction. The axes of the cylinder and the rod are parallel to each other. Motion of the rod moves a piston in the cylinder to sample the fluid. A push member rotatably coupled to the carriage can be adjusted at an angle to the horizontal direction. Because the push member engages the rod to drive it during carriage motion, a given stroke of the carriage produces varying travel distances of the rod depending on the angle to which the push member is set.

  • Patent number: 4726896
Abstract: An on-stream method and apparatus for measuring the content of a mineral constituent in a flowing slurried ore on a dry weight basis, is provided. The slurry density and flow rate, and optionally temperature, are measured to calculate a period of time during which the flowing slurry is diverted into a vessel in order to collect a target mass of ore solids therein. The time period is preferably calculated according to the following formula: ##EQU1## wherein: t is the period of time (sec);M.sub.solid is the selected target mass of the ore (g);Q.sub.slurry is the measured mass flow rate of the slurry (g/sec);p.sub.water is the density of water (g/cm.sup.3);p.sub.slurry is the measured density of the slurry (g/cm.sup.3); andp.sub.solid is the known density of the ore solids contained in the slurry (g/cm.sup.3).The slurry flow is then diverted into the vessel for the duration of the calculated time period.

  • Patent number: 4726879
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for etching semiconductor materials with a high etch rate against an insulator mask using a novel etchant gas mixture. The mixture consists of a chlorocarbon (e.g., CCl.sub.2 F.sub.2, CCl.sub.4 or CCl.sub.3 F), SF.sub.6, O.sub.2 and an inert gas (e.g. He). The preferred gas mixture contains 2/1 ratio of the chlorocarbon to SF6 and the following composition: 1-4% of SF.sub.6, 3-10% of O.sub.2, 74-93% of He and 3-10% of chlorocarbon. The etch rate of silicon (or silicide) against an oxide mask using this etchant gas mixture under normal etching conditions is high, on the order of 30-40. An impressive feature of the process is shape control of trenches by mere manipulation of the RIE system power.

  • Patent number: 4726827
Abstract: A porous glass optical waveguide preform is formed by depositing a coating of glass particulate material on the lateral surface of a core which may be a porous glass body continuously produced by the axial deposition of glass particles. The core rotates and moves longitudinally in one direction with respect to two flame hydrolysis burners which emit streams of glass particles having different compositions. In addition, the two burners reciprocatingly move with respect to a portion of the length of the core. The speed of each burner varies as it traverses along its path of reciprocating motion. The thickness of the layer produced by a burner at a given point is inversely related to the speed of the burner as it passes that point. The layers formed by the completion of a single traverse by both burners combine to form a conically-shaped layer, the composition of which varies from the base toward the apex thereof.

  • Patent number: 4723979
Abstract: A method and apparatus for heat sealing an electron gun mount, having a glass stem, into a neck of a cathode-ray tube includes a mount socket for supporting the mount within the neck and a plurality of burners for applying heat to the outside of the neck proximate the stem. The neck softens, thins and then seals to the stem, causing excess neck material that is lower than the stem, known as cullet, to be cut off. Prior to applying heat, a sleeve is disposed around the mount socket within the neck adjacent to the cullet, with a clearance between the sleeve and both the socket and the neck. A vibrating coil is attached to the sleeve for vibrating the sleeve while applying heat to the outside of the neck.

  • Patent number: 4724048
Abstract: A water distiller apparatus for purifying and degassing domestic water supplies is provided which is constructed for easy cleaning of all parts and in which inflowing water is preheated by condensing steam within a condenser which preheating allows dissolved gases to dissipate through a vent before the inlet water reaches an evaporator portion. The rate of inflowing water is controlled by a temperature responsive valve that is in thermal communication with the condenser to maximize heat transfer and minimize heat and water loss.

  • Patent number: 4724071
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for separating resin from reduced size resin-bearing coal particles by treating the particles with ozone. Particles of reduced size resin-bearing coal are preferably mixed with water to form a slurry. The slurry is then treated with ozone for a short length of time. The slurry is then subjected to froth flotation. The ozone selectively oxidizes the coal, decreasing its hydrophobicity causing the relatively more hydrophobic resin to attach to the bubbles formed during the flotation process. A much improved separation efficiency for resin flotation from coal is observed.

  • Patent number: 4722784
Abstract: In deinking, the flotation of fiber suspensions is performed in a cylindrical tank 2 to which the fiber suspension is fed through a coupling means 36 as primary stream. The fiber suspension is already aerated and is withdrawn through a suction connection 33 below the coupling means 36 and fed after another aeration through a secondary connection 35 above the coupling means. The volume of the circulated secondary stream is greater than the volume of the primary stream. It is thereby assured that the fiber suspension is aerated at least twice and thus better cleaned.
