Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a powdered coating material having a basis of hardenable synthetic resins, hardeners and pigments selected from the group consisting of metals, metal alloys, and mica for coatings with a metallic appearance wherein the single components are mixed in a finely divided state under an atmosphere of a protective gas and wherein the mixture is plasticized, under homogenization, at a temperature at which the viscosity of the synthetic resin is higher than the drop viscosity, but at most sufficiently high as to guarantee the flow, is homogenized by shearing stress and transformed into a powdered state, a powdered coating material prepared by said process and an article being coated with said coating material.
Abstract: Semi-permeable membranes are made from polyamides, especially N-alkoxyalkyl polyamides, and water-soluble polyvinyl alcohols. The membranes are preferably formed as fibers. The membranes can be made from compositions containing the polymer components and a di(lower alkyl) sulfoxide, e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide. The membranes may contain complex-forming metal components. The membranes are useful for separating chemicals from their mixtures by techniques using an aqueous liquid barrier and complex-forming metals, e.g. for the separation of aliphatically-unsaturated hydrocarbons such as ethylene from close-boiling hydrocarbons.

Abstract: A fastener such as a rivet, bolt or screw is provided with a protective coating for protection against corrosion and deterioration, formed by application of a mixture of a powdered metallic substance such as powdered aluminum or molybdenum disulfide with a phenol-formaldehyde resin in a volatile carrier from the group consisting of lower alkyl alcohols, methyl ethyl ketone and petroleum distillate, such as toluene or ethyl alcohol, or both, together with strontium chromate and zinc chromate. Either teflon or fatty amido diamine is added to the foregoing mixture. The thickness of the coating after drying can be made very thin and controlled to a high degree and possesses sufficient toughness and lubricity so that it is not damaged even when used on interference type fasteners.
Abstract: Polymerizable unsaturated polyester resin syrups can be extended with aqueous alkali stabilized colloidal silica in compositions containing from 0.1 to 10.0 parts by weight of aqueous alkali stabilized colloidal silica for each part by weight of the unsaturated polyester resin syrup. The unsaturated polyester resin syrups can be extended further (a) by the addition of reactive fillers such as metal oxides or hydrated metallic salts; (b) by the addition of inert fillers such as clay, silica, glass fibers, perlite; or (c) by the addition of both (a) and (b). The fillers also may include fibrous reinforcing materials such as dispersed glass fibers, randomly oriented fiber mats, wound filaments and woven fabrics. The fillers may be present in amounts from about 0.1 to about 5 times the combined weight of aqueous alkali stabilized colloidal silica and unsaturated polyester resin syrup. The compositions can be employed in coatings, laminates, cast articles, molded articles, or other shaped articles.
