  • Patent number: 6378682
Abstract: A hydraulic coupling for use in an all wheel drive system, utilized in association with a front wheel drive transaxle, including a multi-plate clutch assembly operably connecting two relatively rotatable members and an actuator assembly for actuating the clutch assembly in response to speed differentiation between the two rotary members. The actuator assembly includes a hydraulic pump, a piston disposed in a piston chamber, and a fluid distribution system including a first flow path for supplying hydraulic fluid from a sump to the hydraulic pump and a second flow path for supplying hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic pump to the piston chamber. Hydraulic pressure in the piston chamber controls the magnitude of the clutch engagement force exerted by the piston on the clutch assembly. A control valve assembly is located in the piston chamber, in close proximity to the clutch pack where a majority of heat is generated.

  • Patent number: 6360863
Abstract: A clutch assembly (10) comprising a clutch cover (11), a pressure plate (12) mounted to the cover, a diaphragm spring (13) biasing the pressure plate away from the cover to engage the clutch, a lever (14) for releasing the clutch and a hydraulic slave cylinder (15) mounted on the cover via a support bearing (21) for movement of the lever to release the clutch. A vibration isolating member (29) such as a layer of polymeric material (29) on a race (22) of the support bearing (21) is provided between the support bearing and the slave cylinder. The race (22) of the support bearing (21) is connected to a piston (17) of the slave cylinder slidably received in an annular bore (19) in a housing (20) of the cylinder to define a working chamber (25). The housing (20) is connected with the lever (14) so that pressurization of the working chamber (25) axially displaces the housing to move the lever and disengage the clutch.

  • Patent number: 6354741
Abstract: An improved foil thrust bearing includes a pair of members arranged for relative rotation with respect to one another. One of the pair of members is adapted to rotatably support the other. A thrust bearing disk is operatively disposed between the pair of relatively rotatable members. The thrust bearing disk has a plurality of diverging surface ramps. The surface ramps can comprise an inner ramp and an outer ramp. The thrust bearing disk can also comprise a plurality of radial slots. A plurality of separately formed, converging surface compliant foils are disposed on the thrust bearing disk and between the ramps. An underspring element is operatively disposed between the thrust bearing disk and one of the rotatable members, with the underspring element having a plurality of alternating upper and lower ridges.

  • Patent number: 6142279
Abstract: Modular clutch construction in which a clutch cover assembly, concentrically containing a pressure plate actuating a clutch disc assembly, is fixed to the flywheel of an engine as a modular unit. The construction improves the modular connection between the clutch cover peripheral wall and the flywheel; in particular through the use of pins to restrain the cover from whirling relative to the flywheel, and by a taking advantage of a method of starter ring-gear installation in which the gear is shrink-fitted over the flywheel with the clutch cover peripheral wall intervening, such that the circumferential end margin of the clutch cover is simultaneously clamped between the ring gear and the flywheel cylindrical surface. The clutch cover is thus secured onto the flywheel in an assembly stage of reduced steps, by comparison with methods employing bolts or other fasteners-as the primary connecting means.
