Abstract: Techniques are provided for finding query responses from database queries using an interactive process between a user (e.g., a person entering a query to a database) and a computer system (e.g., a computing system upon which the database resides or which has access to the database). The interactive process comprises providing the user with one or more visual perspectives as feedback on the distribution of points in the database. These visual perspectives may be considered by the user in order for the user to provide feedback to the computer system. The computer system may then use the user-provided feedback to determine the best response to the query.

Abstract: A fault distance indicator (FDI), locates a fault in a power line by modeling pulses of reflected travelling wave signals which are generated from electrical arcs that occur as a result of the fault. Open loop power distribution circuits are arranged in two halves, each half comprising a circuit length from the overhead feed point to an open point with transformers and cable sections located along the circuit length. An FDI is inserted in each half of the loop. The FDI device monitors the circuit using an antenna which receives radio-frequency signals emitted by line faults and records the signatures of these faults. When the “trouble crew” arrives at the scene the recorded signature is downloaded to a portable PC via a radio, infra-red or other telemetry link. The downloaded data is analyzed first to generate a model of the reflected travelling wave signal and then parameters of the model are adjusted to minimize differences between the model and the actual data.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for increasing the efficiency of accessing interdependent data by caching the relevant data in multiple cache buffers. A user may input a preference for an amount of a first level of information and a refresh time period for the first level of information. A user may also input a preference for an amount of a second level of information and a refresh time period for the second level of information. The first level of information and at least one reference to the second level of information may be cached in a first buffer. The second level of information may be cached in a second buffer. The first level of information, along with a reference to the second level of information, and the second level of information may be refreshed based upon user preferences. Upon request for the interdependent data, the first level of data may be retrieved. The reference to the second level of data may be determined and then the second level of data may be retrieved based on the given reference.

Abstract: A migration tool and methods for migrating computer personalization information from one computer to another when a network is not available, when a network is available but use of the network is undesirable for some reason, and/or when the computer which is the source of the data being migrated has limited or unknown resources to support conventional forms of data migration.

The relationships between the objects may be established and enhanced by various human or automatic means. An attractive user interface facilitates use and management of the network by many users. Access to the content network may be customized for distinct user groups.

Abstract: A system for record keeping that utilizes the advances in computer technology and alleviates problems such time constraints by monitoring information about a person or resource and automatically generating journal entries for that person or resource at the appropriate times. The appropriate times for entry generation can be defined for each individual through a rules-based mechanism. When an individual's rules are met, a journal entry is automatically generated according to a template defined in the computer system. The entry is placed in the individual's electronic journal, and, if desired, the individual can be notified of the generated entry or delay entry of said journal entry until receiving a notification at a later designated time.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the use of linkcells in retrieving site data pertaining to one or more sites from a site data repository. The linkcells facilitate the resolution of several types of queries, including queries to determine a specified number of closest sites to a user's location and queries to determine sites located with a specified distance of the user's location. In one aspect, the present invention relates to a linkcell having a cell perimeter that comprises one or more cell boundary sections, a cell identifier, and a link to a data table, where one or more sites are associated with the linkcell, and where site data pertaining to those sites is stored in the data table. The cell identifier may be a name derived from the coordinates of sites associated with the linkcell. Advantageously, it is not typically necessary to examine data on all sites in the site data repository to resolve queries if linkcells are used.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an interpretation service are disclosed. The method includes the steps of receiving an incoming telephone call from a user, forming a plurality of databases, receiving at least one user information item via the incoming telephone call, searching at least one of the plurality of databases for at least one sentence correspondent to the at least one information item, outputting a translation from at least one of the plurality of databases of the at least one sentence correspondent to the at least one information item, and outputting, in audio on the incoming telephone call, the translation. The apparatus includes an interpreter and a registration service. The registration service includes a private information manager that receives an incoming telephone call from a user, wherein the private information manager manages a plurality of databases, wherein the plurality of databases includes at least one database of sentences registered to the individual user.

The method includes receiving QA event data and storing the QA event data in the database. The method further includes cross-referencing the QA event data, updating the database with the QA event data and providing information in response to an inquiry.

Abstract: A method and system for high-speed database replication. Audit update records and audit backout records are generated by the primary system, and are transmitted to the backup system in multiple streams in parallel. The backup system stores the received audit records as audit image trails, and applies the audit updates and audit backouts to the backup database without regard to whether the transactions committed or aborted and without regard to whether the backup system received a complete set of the audit records pertaining to the transactions. Upon the occurrence of a predetermined event, the backup system applies all the audit updates and backouts it received, and subsequently “undoes” questionable audit updates and audit backouts.

Abstract: A method of identifying units of translation in a block of source content, so as to segment the block of content into the units of translation, includes selecting one or more delineating characteristics of the source content in addition to lexical characteristics. The method further includes determining instances of the delineating characteristics in the block of source content, and identifying pairs of the instances within the text. The method also includes, for each pair of instances of the delineating characteristics, associating a first instance of the pair with a first boundary of a unit of translation, and associating a second instance of the pair with a second boundary of the unit of translation. One embodiment further includes identifying target units of translation in a block of target content, and assigning associations among the source units of translation and the target units of translation.

Abstract: Methods for accessing relevant data from data sources for presentation, and computer readable media for the same are provided. One exemplary method defines multiple dimensions. Then data sources are identified that contain relevant information for the dimensions. Next the data sources are accessed through an abstraction layer. The abstraction layer performs the operations of transferring portions of the relevant information to a data structure and displaying the selected portions of the relevant information. Some notable advantages of the discussed methods include the ability to create virtual dimensions by building a hierarchical table structure from data in a flat file. The use of an abstraction layer allows for ease of modification and efficiency in presentation, since only the user requested data is presented. In addition, the customer is provided dynamic reports in real-time, thereby allowing for time sensitive and mission critical business decisions to be made with current data.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for presenting a list of items to a user via a device having a limited display capability. In general, the number of items in the list may be much greater than the device can display at once. A list module is configured to receive a list of items and determine the number of items, or ranges of items, that may be displayed at once. If the list contains too many items to be displayed on one card, the list module divides them into groups nearly equal in size, so that to display any one item requires the same or nearly the same number of cards. Until each range is less than or equal to the number of items that can be displayed simultaneously, the list module presents (e.g., transmits to the device) cards having successively smaller ranges. Eventually a card will have few enough items to be displayed individually, and the user may make a final selection.

Abstract: A system and method for effectively implementing a personal channel for interactive television comprises a personal channel manager that may include a configuration module, a search module, and a content packaging module. A system user may utilize the configuration module to perform a personal channel configuration procedure to specify personal channel configuration data for performing a content record search procedure. The search module may manage the content record search procedure according to one or more search parameters that may be defined during the personal channel configuration procedure. The search module may selectively locate and access one or more content records from one or more remote content databases during the foregoing content record search procedure. The content packaging module may then responsively coordinate a content record sorting procedure according to user-specified sorting criteria to thereby organize the located content records into a personal channel program.

Abstract: An improved term addressable memory of an accelerator system and method includes a mechanism for performing predetermined plurality of pattern matches of packets to classify them for use with stateful protocol processing units that can resolve session data spread across multiple data packets and process them for the ultimate destination. The invention replaces a conventional content addressable memory with a term addressable memory, whereby redundant terms are recorded with a single memory entry. Two classes of terms are used to match packet addresses and application ports, as well as a much smaller session CAM that matches the aggregate match of all terms to a specific session.

Abstract: A file system maintains information about files in data areas called dinodes. Dinodes are grouped into dinode pages wherein each dinode page includes information about one or more dinodes. Each dinode may use extended attribute data. Each dinode page having at least one dinode that uses extended attribute data has a corresponding dinodex page. The dinodex page includes extended attribute information about any of the dinodes in the dinode page that use extended attribute information. The page is divided into areas, each area corresponding to a different dinode. A lock is established for each dinode page so that any dinode adding or deleting its extended attribute address obtains the lock before proceeding to maintain cooperation between the dinodes. In this manner multiple extended attribute areas are prevented from corresponding with a particular dinode page and unused extended attribute pages are removed without unduly impacting system performance.

Abstract: A worldwide genealogy data storage and retrieval system for implementation on the internet is described, wherein genealogical data from every source can be collected, reviewed, revised, extended, consolidated, summarized, indexed, lineage-linked, and displayed. The invention further relates to a method and apparatus for cooperative publishing and distribution of genealogical data. The invention allows owners of lineage-linked genealogical data to publish the data in any size increments and for buyers to select and retrieve any number of names and associated data. An integrated micropayment system requires users of the data to make payments for each increment of data received, and royalties are paid to the owners of the data from these payments.
