Patent number: 7691481Abstract: A composite article includes an acrylic layer, a UV-cured layer formed from a UV-curable composition, and a polyurethane backing layer. A method of forming the composite article includes applying the UV-curable composition to the acrylic layer such that the composition is between the acrylic layer and the polyurethane backing layer to enhance bonding between these layers. The UV-curable composition includes at least one monomer which is an ethylenically unsaturated methacrylate monomer, an ethylenically unsaturated acrylate monomer, or both. The at least one monomer has a hydroxy functional group. The monomer is compatible with the acrylic layer and the hydroxy functional group of the monomer is reactive with a polyisocyanate from the polyurethane backing layer. The UV-curable composition also includes a curing initiator that is reactive with the monomer. Upon exposure of the UV-curable composition to UV electromagnetic radiation, the curing initiator enables the composition to cure to the acrylic layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2005Date of Patent: April 6, 2010Assignee: BASF CorporationInventors: Calvin T. Patent number: 7662482Abstract: The present invention provides an improved bonding system including an adhesion promoter that may be used to help adhesively bond two or more components together. The preferred use of the present adhesion promoter is in a transportation vehicle (e.g., automobile), and more particularly in an engine assembly for use in such vehicles. The present invention includes a bonded automobile engine assembly including at least one plastic component, an adhesive that bonds the plastic component to at least one separate component, and an adhesion promoter between the adhesive and the plastic component. Fasteners for attaching components are optionally employed. In one specific example, an intake manifold including a plastic component is bonded to an engine assembly.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2005Date of Patent: February 16, 2010Assignee: Dow Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Yee Yang Wang, Barbara J. Patent number: 7645511Abstract: This invention discloses a process for synthesizing a modified crosslinked elastomeric particle which comprises a two-step polymerization of a conjugated diolefin monomer and a vinyl aromatic monomer by emulsion polymerization, wherein the particle is synthesized by the steps of (1) polymerizing a conjugated diolefin monomer, alone or in combination with a vinyl aromatic monomer, and optionally a crosslinking monomer, to create a crosslinked elastomeric core having residual double bonds and an outer surface; (2) polymerizing a monomer of a vinyl aromatic monomer, alone or in combination with a diolefin monomer, to create a polymeric shell, wherein the polymeric shell is grafted to the outer surface of the polymeric core by reacting with the residual double bonds of the polymeric core; and (3) coagulating the core-shell emulsion latex solution to recover the particles.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2006Date of Patent: January 12, 2010Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Eric Sean Castner, Lei Zheng, Feng Anne Xie, Ping Zhang

Patent number: 7552605Abstract: A leather finishing process in which, in pertinent part, a warm water milling step is added after the base coat is applied to “crust” leather and cured. The warm water contains at least one dye fixation agent including but not limited to about 0.1-2.0% by weight of formic acid. Moreover, the base coat itself is an aqueous base coat containing at least two polymers such as an acrylic salt or a polyurethane salt. Between the polymeric constituents of the base coat, the acid fixation agent, and the use of the warm water milling step after the base coat has been applied and dried, a surprisingly natural feel to the leather is attained without loss of excellent adhesion, wear-resistance and other properties when the leather is completely finished.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2003Date of Patent: June 30, 2009Assignee: Seton CompanyInventor: Hermann Winkler
