Patent number: 5651961Abstract: A mild permanent wave reducing agent-containing composition and method of permanently waving or straightening human hair that provides a strong, long lasting curl, or long lasting straight hair formation, while minimizing hair damage. The composition includes two ionic compounds, one cationic and the other anionic, that complex in solution to provide synergy in waving efficiency, thereby providing a strongly reconfigured hair configuration (curled or straightened). At least one of the ionic compounds functions as a reducing agent for hair, capable of breaking the disulfide bonds in the hair so that the bonds later can be reformed via oxidation, when the hair is in the desired configuration. Examples of cationic compounds include thiocholine, choline, cysteineamide, cysteamine, and combinations thereof. Examples of anionic compounds include cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, thioglycolic acid or its salts, and combinations thereof. Patent number: 5626852Abstract: Described is a fragrancing composition having fragrancing components that are not activated until, e.g., application to the skin of a human. The composition is alkaline or (if anhydrous) capable of producing an alkaline pH when in contact with water, prior to application, and includes (1) a vehicle such that when the composition is in contact with water, prior to application, the composition is at an alkaline pH; and (2) at least one potential fragrance that is at least one compound having little or no odor in the alkaline composition but which, e.g., is hydrolyzed in a lower pH environment to produce compounds having a relatively strong aroma. Upon application of the alkaline composition to the skin surface, the strong buffering capacity of the skin (the surface of which has a normal pH of 5.5-7.0) neutralizes alkalinity of the composition (lowers pH) so as to restore normal skin surface pH; the potential fragrance is then hydrolyzed at the lower pH to release the compound having relatively strong aroma.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1994Date of Patent: May 6, 1997Assignees: The Mennen Company, Takasago International CorporationInventors: Robert Suffis, Morton L. Patent number: 5626839Abstract: Compositions, methods, and kits for cosmetically producing a tanned appearance in desired areas of skin. The composition includes a self-tanning agent together with intimately admixed fluorescent materials in a cosmetic carrier. Without prolonged exposure to intense solar or artificial radiation, applying the self-tanning agent imparts a tanned appearance which develops several hours to a day after application. The fluorescent materials absorb at one frequency, and emit at another visible frequency. The admixture of self-tanning agent and fluorescent materials allows application of the self-tanning agent selectively to desired areas of the skin. A light source which emits at the absorbing frequency of the fluorescent materials may be provided together with the compositions in kit form.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1994Date of Patent: May 6, 1997Inventor: Virginia Scales-Medeiros

Patent number: 5616332Abstract: A cosmetic skin-renewal stimulating composition suitable for daily use by consumers and providing anti-aging benefits with control of delayed irritation. The invention adds small quantities of a naturally occurring small-molecule, biologically active, aliphatic aminodiol lipid, for example sphingosine, to cosmetics incorporating a skin-renewal stimulating acid, for example lactic, hydroxybenzoic or retinoic acid, to provide control of deferred hyperproliferative allergenicity induced by the skin-renewal stimulating acid. Comparative data show a beneficial control of long-term irritation induced by several weeks of daily use of a variety of skin-renewal stimulating acids. The novel activity is displayed by sphingosine alone among several classes of biologically active skin lipids, in a selective and surprising manner. The results suggest applicability of the invention to wider classes of cell-proliferation agents for the control of deferred hyperproliferative allergenicity.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1995Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Inventor: Morris Herstein
