  • Patent number: 9883893
Abstract: Anterior cervical instrumentation systems, methods, and devices are disclosed. Systems may facilitate immobilizing or providing support for the cervical portion of the vertebral column of a patient. A device may comprise a plate having two channels located in a proximal to distal direction, and may further comprise at least one aperture. The device may further comprise attachment elements such as attachment cross-links and spacer cross-links, and fasteners. The plate and the attachment elements may be secured to the vertebrae by passing fasteners through apertures and channels. The length of the plate, position and number of the attachment cross-links, position and number of spacer cross-links and degree of movement may be intraoperatively selected by the surgeon to provide an optimal application and procedural outcome. Uniform components of the devices and systems allow for a more streamlined and simplified method of treating spinal conditions.

  • Patent number: 9883872
Abstract: An adjustable reaming device can include a proximal reamer and a positionable element. The positionable element removably attaches to the proximal reamer at one of a plurality of discrete longitudinal locations along the proximal reamer. A distal end of the positionable element forms a stop, which can contact a proximal end of a distal reamer and thereby limit distal motion of the proximal reamer with respect to the distal reamer. When the distal reamer is in contact with the positionable element, the distal reamer and proximal reamer are longitudinally offset by a one of a plurality of specified offsets. In some examples, the specified offsets correspond to a plurality of specified, discrete lengths for which implantable femoral stems are available.

  • Patent number: 9883898
Abstract: A pedicle screw may include an electrically conductive portion formed from a material having a greater electrical conductivity than that of the base material from which the screw is formed. The electrically conductive portion preferentially channels electrical energy supplied by an electrical probe to a location of the electrically conductive portion facing the nerve root. The portion thus provides a sort of electrical highway that helps to focus the electrical energy applied to the pedicle screw in a particular direction, towards the presumed location of the nerve root. As an alternative to placement of the electrically conductive portion in the pedicle screw itself, the electrically conductive portion could be placed within a tap that is used in preparing the pedicle for receipt of the pedicle screw (e.g., in forming the threaded structure in the pedicle bone into which the pedicle screw will then be placed).

  • Patent number: 9877639
Abstract: A blade insert illumination system includes one or more illumination elements composed of a transparent or semitransparent polymer that is preferably biocompatible and sterilizable. The illumination elements operate as a waveguide and may incorporate optical components such as, for example, facets, lenses, gratings, prisms and or diffusers to operate as precision optics for customized delivery of the light energy. The illumination elements may be modular, allowing components to be mixed and matched for different sizes of blade retractors, or may be a single integrated unit.

  • Patent number: 9877766
Abstract: A driver device (hexalobe or otherwise) that includes a handle portion, an elongate shaft portion, and an end portion that includes a screw engagement portion and a split manufactured offset from the central axis of the end portion and/or the screw engagement portion, forming two asymmetric halves of the end portion and/or screw engagement portion. This screw engagement portion is slightly oversized relative to the corresponding tool engagement recess of the locking cap, set screw, or bone screw. Thus, when the screw engagement portion is pressed into the corresponding tool engagement recess of the locking cap, set screw, or bone screw, the split manufactured offset from the central axis of the end portion and/or the screw engagement portion allows the screw engagement portion to compress slightly, creating a friction fit between the screw engagement portion and the corresponding tool engagement recess of the locking cap, set screw, or bone screw.

  • Patent number: 9877759
Abstract: A wedge-shaped bone implant, particularly but not necessarily, for fixing bones of the foot is provided. The implant has bone screw bores that are each configured to hold a bone screw at a particular angle for receipt in a foot bone, eliminating the need to also use a plate. The implant can include an opening that extends through the implant body from one tapered side thereof to the other tapered side thereof. This opening allows the introduction and retention of bone graft material to promote bone fusion. One or both tapered sides of the body may also have teeth, serrations or the like. The implant body may include a hole or the like in the distal aspect thereof. This allows for the insertion of a metallic component (e.g. titanium or tantalum) to allow for the visibility of the extent of the implant body in radiography, x-ray, or the like.

  • Patent number: 9880227
Abstract: An electrical device includes a memory storing a value indicative the remaining available rated capacity of one or more batteries. The stored value is changed in use to reflect reducing capacity. The initial stored value is chosen so that there is a very high (e.g. >99.9%) confidence that the one or more batteries will provide at least the capacity indicated by the initial stored value. This reduces the chance of failure during emergency procedures. The one or more batteries may be integral to the electrical device. An override facility is provided.
