  • Patent number: 3949954
Abstract: A projectile carrying a Loran processor is directed to a target along a line, referred to as a lorhumb line, which is the locus of all points i for which TDA- TDA.sub.i /TDB- TDB.sub.i is constant. Any deviation results in a cross-track error directing the projectile back on a correct path to the target. No vertical tracking is necessary because the projectile is flown near to the target and caused to execute a ballistic foldover so that it travels vertically downward towards the target. During vertical descent an along-path error signal is generated to control the vertical fins of the projectile.

  • Patent number: 3949212
Abstract: An underwater light unit is constructed to be placed together within simi units around a ship anchorage on the bottom of a body of water. The construction of the optical portion of the housing permits the uniform illumination of said bottom with a high intensity light so as to produce good silhouette in the volume of water space located above the light units, as well as permitting direct observation of objects on said bottom. The optical portion and base portions interfit in such a manner as to have their watertight integrity remain uneffected by nearby explosions. The housing and mounting stake are constructed and arranged so as to provide a low mounting height above the bottom, so as not to interfere with the passage of surface vessels through the illuminated water space.

  • Patent number: 3948178
Abstract: A propellent-charge cartridge case which comprises a cartridge-case stub which has a cartridge-case wall and includes at least one part provided with a resilient gas check which can be pressed against a barrel wall. The cartridge-case wall is formed with an annular groove cut from the outside into the cartridge-case wall which weakens the cross section of the wall. A resilient insert fills the annular groove so that as gas pressure builds up within the cartridge case upon firing, the cartridge case stub is deformed in the region of the annular groove so as to reduce the size thereof and squeeze the insert out of the annular groove in gas-sealing manner against the barrel wall.

  • Patent number: 3949026
Abstract: A graphite jacket for a fuel element for nuclear reactors is made by placing a dry mixture of graphite and a powdered thermosetting resin in a mold without application of pressure and heating said mixture to thermoset said resin and then subjecting to a coking treatment. The coked jacket is then filled with a mixture of fissile particles and graphite and the complete assembly is closed and treated with a gaseous hydrocarbon at an elevated temperature to deposit pyrolytic carbon.

  • Patent number: 3948723
Abstract: A device is provided which is installed in a reactor prior to carrying out refueling operations and which accurately locates and isolates a selected core location to permit rapid withdrawal and insertion of fuel subassemblies at that location. A shielded plug designed to cooperate with the refueling apparatus is inserted into an access port in the reactor head. A structural shroud extends down from the plug and carries at its lower end a radially floating, hexagonal spreader tube with mechanisms to rotate it for angular alignment purposes and a linear drive for inserting it into the core. The upper end of the spreader tube serves as a guide for leading the fuel handling apparatus into alignment with the chosen subassembly.

  • Patent number: 3946696
Abstract: The invention is an automatically controlled magnetic marine mine sweeping ystem that does not constitute a safety hazard to the ship deploying it. It includes a ship that trails a pair of electrodes within the water which are, in turn, electrically energized by a variable current generator to induce a magnetic field therein. The intensity of said magnetic field is sensed by a magnetometer; and by means of a closed-loop, negative-feedback circuit incorporating said magnetometer, said current generator, and said sea water, the intensity of said magnetic field is limited to the extent that it does not extend under the ship and detonate marine mines that are close enough to be destructive thereto.
