  • Patent number: 11094099
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for applying a unifying visual effect, such as posterization, to all or most of the visual elements in a film. In one implementation, a posterization standard includes a line work standard, a color palette, a plurality of color blocks characterized by one or more hard edges, and a gradient transition associated with each of the hard edges. The visual elements, including live actors and set pieces, are prepared in accordance with the posterization standard. The actors are filmed performing live among the set pieces. The live-action segments can be composited with digital elements. The result is a combination of both real and stylized elements, captured simultaneously, to produce an enhanced hybrid of live action and animation.

  • Patent number: 10991345
Abstract: To manage dynamic adjustment of the refresh rate of a computer display, the operating system defines at least two playback modes: one or more custom modes that can be selected by applications, and a standard mode which is a default setting for the system that can be expected by applications. The operating system provides an application programming interface that enables an application to request using a custom mode. If approved to use the custom mode, then the application presents frames for display based on the custom mode. The operating system stores timing data for each buffered frame indicating how to play the frame in both standard mode and the custom mode. If a transition back to the standard mode occurs, the operating system uses the timing data to properly present frames of video until the application stops generating frames of video in the custom mode.

  • Patent number: 10984756
Abstract: A display system divides a screen into regions and applies a different set of rendering/encoding parameters to each region. The system applies a first set of parameters to a first region that is being viewed by a fovea of an eye of a user. The system may also apply a second set of parameters to a second region that is being viewed by a parafovea of the eye, and apply a third set of parameters to a third region that is being viewed by the area of the eye outside of the parafovea. The first set of parameters are selected to yield relatively high image quality, while the second set of parameters are yield intermediate quality, and the third set of parameters yield lower quality. As a result, the second region and the third region can be rendered, encoded, and transmitted with less computing power and less bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 10916064
Abstract: Embodiments resolve hemisphere ambiguity at a system comprising sensors. A hand-held controller of the system emits magnetic fields. Sensors positioned within a headset of the system detect the magnetic fields. A first position and orientation of the hand-held controller is determined within a first hemisphere with respect to the headset based on the magnetic fields. A second position and orientation of the hand-held controller is determined within a second hemisphere, diametrically opposite the first hemisphere, with respect to the headset based on the magnetic fields. A normal vector is determined with respect to the headset, and a position vector identifying a position of the hand-held controller with respect to the headset in the first hemisphere. A dot-product of the normal vector and the position vector is calculated, and the first position and orientation of the hand-held controller is determined to be accurate when a result of the dot-product is positive.
