  • Patent number: 5456685
Abstract: An dual tapered orthopedic fixation screw is used to anchor ligament grafts inside a bore in a bone mass. The fixation screw includes a root portion having a front section, a cylindrical center section and a back section. A screw thread is formed over substantially the entire root portion to increase purchase. A taper is formed on the back of the root portion to increase compression of the fixation screw against the ligament graft. The screw further includes a rounded portion that is formed between the taper and the back end of the root to prevent the screw from fraying or cutting the ligament.

  • Patent number: 5431657
Abstract: An instrument 2 used to install both the outer shell 40 and bearing liner 50 of a conventional acetabular cup assembly 4. Instrument 2 includes an impactor 30 and a reversible cup or head component 10, which is adapted for driving shell 40 into the acetabulum and for seating bearing liner 50 into the shell. Head component 10 has a rounded semi-spherical surface 12 on one end and a substantially flat surface 14 on the opposite end. Impactor 30 includes a longitudinal extension 36 which can be inserted into a bore 20 in head component 10 from either direction to secure the head component to the impactor. When instrument 2 is used to seat shell 40 into the acetabulum, head component 10 is fitted to impactor 30 with semi-spherical surface 12 facing outward for abutment against inner surface 44 of shell 40. Shell 40 is connected to the distal end 39 of extension 36, which protrudes from semi-spherical surface 12 of head component 10.

  • Patent number: 5431658
Abstract: The Moskovich facilitator facilitates the insertion of bone grafts between two vertebrae. The invention has two flat tong-like guides that distract the vertebrae as the graft slides between the two guides towards the vertebrae. The two guides have grooved surfaces to keep the graft from rotating or from slipping laterally. The two guides each have a lip to keep them from slipping too far in between the vertebrae. The two guides can be combined by an elbow piece into one part. The elbow is offset to permit impacting the graft directly on the angle of the axes of the guides. The two guides each have a notch, and the two notches hold an inserter/extractor. The screw-type inserter/extractor slowly rams the graft in between the vertebrae without impact, and slowly extracts the guides after the graft is seated.

  • Patent number: 5429639
Abstract: A spinal fixator comprising two substantially parallel assemblies each which includes a slideway having an open slot therein, a plurality of rings which define a slideway opening having a profile corresponding to that of the slideway, each ring having a bore aligned with a hole in the bottom of the ring through which pedicular screws having a head and self-tapping threads are disposed, and caps secured in the bore of each ring.

  • Patent number: 5423827
Abstract: A surgical jig for orienting a femoral component of a prosthetic knee prosthesis angularly with respect to the axis of the patient's femur which jig utilizes a single drill plate or guide for condylar pins, but permits variation in the placement of those pins. The jig comprises a distal plate which is placed against the distal end of the femur. The distal plate has two condyle fingers for grasping the posterior side of the femoral condyles. Gage means are provided to measure the size of the distal end of the femur. A rotatable drill guide permits the surgeon to adjust the placement of two drill bores for receiving condyle pins on a femoral component of a knee prosthesis.
