Patent number: 7085357Abstract: A system and method are provided for a Home Network telephone answering device (TAD) to notify external systems of voice mail messages. The method comprises: receiving the message from a communication media; recording a voice mail message for registered Home Network endpoints; and, sending a notification of the recorded message from the TAD to a system external to the Home Network. The notification may include information such as the calling telephone number, the calling party's name, the time of the call, the addressed endpoint, and the length of the call. Some aspects of the method further comprise: converting the format of the recorded message to one that is compatible with the external system to which the notification is sent. Other aspects of the method further comprise: in response to the notification, receiving a request for the playback of the recorded message; and, supplying the recorded message.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2003Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Assignee: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventors: Sherman L. Patent number: 6990180Abstract: Tiresome entry of numerous letters of the alphabet into a hand-held device for assembling a short text message for transmission via a short message service (SMS) to a second terminal is avoided by the sending of a short voice message (SVM). The SVM is recorded in the sending terminal and sent to a SVM service center (SVMSC). The SVMSC may notify the intended recipient of the arrival of the SVM and await acceptance before sending it. The second terminal may then commence a bidirectional communication so that an instant voice message session can be established. Alternatively, the problem can be overcome by converting the spoken SVM to text in the user terminal by means of voice recognition software and sending the converted text to the recipient by means of the traditional SMS infrastructure for display as text or for playback as text converted to voice.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2001Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones LimitedInventor: Petri Vuori

Patent number: 6954517Abstract: A method for providing multiple calling service announcements on a single circuit card within a telephone network. The method reduces the number of stored speech files necessary to generate announcements regarding a calling service such as Automatic Call Back or Enhanced Repeat Dial. By reducing the amount of speech data stored on a circuit card, multiple calling service announcements can be provided on a single circuit card, thereby reducing equipment costs.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2002Date of Patent: October 11, 2005Assignee: SBC Knowledge Ventures, L.P.Inventors: Carol Ann Rice, Ronald Dale Crumpler, John David Downey

Patent number: 6944273Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for entering and transmitting a message at a future delivery time to a receiving device that is coupled either to a telephony-centric network or to a data-centric network. The apparatus includes a message server, a data-centric network server, and a telephony-centric network server. The message server translates the message into a format compatible with the receiving device and initiates delivery of the message at the future delivery time. The data-centric network server transmits the message over the data-centric network and, if the receiving device is addressable over the data-centric network, then said data-centric network server delivers the message directly to the receiving device. The telephony-centric network server provides an interface between the data-centric network server and the telephony-centric network.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2002Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Emmanuel L. Patent number: 6940959Abstract: A local CPE broadcasts incoming call information to at least one remote CPE. Before or after at least one ring tone is received, the local CPE is taken off-hook. An incoming voice message is received, and the incoming voice message is broadcast over a communications network to the remote CPE. Alternatively, incoming caller data is received, a corresponding voice message is determined as a function of at least a portion of the incoming caller data, and the voice message is broadcast over a communications network to the remote CPE. As a further alternative, the caller data is broadcast over the communications network, and the corresponding voice message is determined by the remote CPE. As yet another alternative, incoming call information is announced using on-hook customer premises equipment (CPE). An indication of an incoming CPE alerting signal (CAS) tone is received, a frequency shift keying (FSK) signal is detected as a result of receiving the indication.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2000Date of Patent: September 6, 2005Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Alan D. Patent number: 6937706Abstract: A system and method for monitoring a telephone switching environment. In a preferred embodiment the system and method simultaneously monitor both an SMDR link and a real-time CTI link, gather information about calls from both sources, and combine gathered information into a single data model of the telephony activity. A server is provided which in a preferred embodiment comprises two main modules: a translation module and a message router module. Several translation modules can be used—one for each PBX interface or vendor API layer. The server accepts data from a PBX or similar equipment in a telephone switch environment, and can use both real-time CTI communications links and asynchronous information sources such as the Station Message Detail Recording (SMDR) interface. The server then translates and combines the various types of data into a unified, normalized format.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2001Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Dictaphone CorporationInventors: Valerie Bscheider, David A. Patent number: 6914966Abstract: Schemes for routing a call using caller identification are described herein. These schemes are termed “real caller ID” and can be capable of determining the identity of a calling party independent of a telephone number from which the call originated. According to one exemplary embodiment, a method of routing a call from a calling party to a receiving party may include accessing a database containing a plurality of voice templates of prior calling parties. Each voice template may have correlated therewith a call disposition parameter defined by the receiving party. Next, a voice response from the calling party may be compared with one of the plurality of voice templates stored in the database. Subsequently, the call may be routed to the receiving party based on a match between the voice response and the one of the plurality of voice templates.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2003Date of Patent: July 5, 2005Assignees: Verizon Laboratories Inc., BBNT Solutions LLCInventors: Robert Anthony Virzi, Marie Wenzel Meteer

Patent number: 6904141Abstract: A device for implementing a method of remotely routing a voice call forward to a telematic device is disclosed. The device first maintains a call state of the voice call in response to an answering of call forwarding rings by the telematic device. The device then forwards the calls to the next assigned device in response to a failure of a user of the telematic device to answer fake rings from the telematic device. Such a failure can be indicated by a monitoring of a prescribed number of back ring tones or a dropping of call within a prescribed timer window.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2001Date of Patent: June 7, 2005Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jasmin Jijina, John J. Patent number: 6891942Abstract: A caller may establish preferences regarding special call handling of a call to a called. The caller may be notified when a special call handling option is about to be performed. The called may have the option of skipping the call handling option or aborting the call. In another alternative, the preferences of the caller are obtained and stored prior to the placement of the call. These preferences are then used to guide special call handling during the course of the call. In this fashion, the caller need not be a passive party relative to special call handling but may provide input so as to help guide special call handling.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1999Date of Patent: May 10, 2005Assignee: MCI, Inc.Inventors: Kelvin Porter, Carol Waller
