  • Patent number: 5802453
Abstract: In a radio paging system and a radio paging method, in which all transmitters are simply synchronized with each other with a satisfactory precision. A central exchange and each transmitter are each provided with a GPS clock for measuring time according to a current time transmitted from the GPS clock. An encoder of the central exchange adds to a message received from a network a real time, which is information to specify time to send the message from each transmitter, according to the current time measured by the GPS clock thereof and then distributes the message to the transmitters. A synchronizing section of each transmitter sends from a transmitting unit the message distributed from the central exchange to a receiver at a time specified by the real time added to the message according to the current time measured by the GPS clock thereof.

  • Patent number: 5799254
Abstract: The wireless local loop system employs cellular technology to provide telephone service to fixed telephones of remote stations having otherwise conventional handsets. The remote station emulates a conventional public switched telephone network by providing an artificial dial tone from the handset of the remote station, after the handset is taken off-hook. The artificial dial tone is locally generated by the remote station. The system, however, delays providing the dial tone if the system is busy, i.e. if the system is under a load condition. To this end, the system monitors load levels and transmits signals to the remote stations indicating load conditions. A remote station, prior to granting at dial tone to the user, receives the load condition signals, determines whether the system is currently under load and, if so, defers the dial tone.

  • Patent number: 5799272
Abstract: An apparatus for compressing a speech signal into a compressed speech signal that is represented by a plurality of parameters. A time-varying digital filter is used to model the vocal tract. A number of LPC coefficients specify the transfer function of the filter updated on frame basis. An excitation signal is input to the filter analyzed on sub frame basis. This excitation signal includes either an adaptive vector quantiser code or a first pulse sequence, followed by a second pulse sequence. Selection logic is used to determine whether the adaptive vector quantiser code or the first pulse sequence better represents the speech signal. Based thereon, a switch selects either the adaptive vector quantiser code or the first pulse sequence. Thus, the parameters which are transmitted through a channel to a destination decoder include the LPC filter coefficients, either the adaptive vector quantiser code or the first pulse sequence, the second pulse sequence, and one bit indicating the state of the switch.

  • Patent number: 5797097
Abstract: A system for communicating location data regarding the present service area for a "roaming" cellular paging device in a paging system. Each cellular paging device monitors a cellular network control channel to detect a cellular system identification signal transmitted by a cellular mobile radiotelephone (CMR) system. If the cellular system identification signal does not match a preassigned code for a host CMR system associated with the paging system, it responds by transmitting an identification signal to the MSC via the cellular network control channel. This identification signal includes: (1) a unique identification code that identifies the source of the identification signal, and (2) at least a portion of the system identification signal that was received by the cellular paging device. The CMR system determines that the identification signal has been transmitted by a "roaming" device associated with another CMR system and, accordingly, sends the identification signal to a verification system.

  • Patent number: 5797119
Abstract: In a code excited speech encoder, an input speech signal is segmented into speech samples at first intervals and a spectral parameter is derived from the speech samples that occur at second intervals longer than the first intervals, the spectral parameter representing the characteristic spectral feature. Each speech sample is weighted with the spectral parameter for producing weighted speech samples. The pitch period of the speech signal is determined from the weighted speech samples. A predetermined number of excitation code vectors having smaller amounts of distortion are selected from excitation codebooks as candidate code vectors. The candidate vectors are comb-filtered with a delay time set equal to the pitch period. One of the filtered code vectors having a minimum distortion is selected. The selected filtered code vector is calculated for minimum distortion and, in response thereto, a gain code vector is selected from a gain codebook.

  • Patent number: 5787347
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for selecting a system for communication with a personal station, such as a cellular telephone or a PCS station, in a roaming area. The personal station transmits a system access message to a default system. When the default system that receives the system access message is a visited system in the roaming area and the personal station is not registered with the visited system, the visited system registers the presence of the personal station in the roaming area with a home system for the personal station. The home system sends a response including a selection indication to the personal station through the visited system. The selection indication contains selection information for controlling selection of a system for communication with the personal station in the roaming area. The personal station selects a system for communication in the roaming area in accordance with the selection information.

  • Patent number: 5765110
Abstract: A cellular telephone with a wire connection function has a unique telephone number assigned thereto and has a function of performing a wire speech communication upon connection to a wire telephone line to which another telephone number is assigned. The cellular telephone includes a connection section and a selection section. When an incoming call is received while the wire telephone line is connected to the cellular telephone, the connection section generates an outgoing call to a different terminal having a different telephone number, by using a radio channel or the wire line which is available, to establish a speech communication, and connecting the incoming call to the different terminal. The selection section selects whether to enable or disable the connection section. The call terminated to the cellular telephone can be connected to another designated terminal.

  • Patent number: 5758288
Abstract: A cellular telephone mobile unit position determining method which utilizes a plurality of range transceivers located at known fixed locations adapted to transmit approximately synchronized digital range signals. The method is especially adapted to determine the position of a cellular mobile unit within cellular service areas for determining billing charges and/or access restrictions. According to the invention, the fixed position range transceivers transmit range signals which are received by a mobile unit. The mobile unit determines either the time difference of arrival or absolute time of arrival of the range signals, which in turn is used to determine the mobile unit's position for cellular billing and/or access restriction purposes. The range transceivers are operable to receive an error signal and correspondingly adjust the output of the next transmitted range signal so as to drive the detected synchronization error to approximately zero.

  • Patent number: 5758293
Abstract: Information is retrieved from an information source by wirelessly receiving, at a cellular telephone switch, a request by a subscriber unit for a predetermined selection of information. The request is communicated to the information source using at least one of a satellite communication system and a wireless data network. The information source retrieves the predetermined selection of information. A transmission of the predetermined selection to the cellular telephone switch is inhibited if a utilization level of at least one of the satellite communication system and the wireless data network exceeds a threshold. When the utilization level is below the threshold, the predetermined selection is communicated to the cellular telephone switch. The predetermined selection is then forwarded to the subscriber unit when a utilization level of the cellular telephone switch is below a predetermined threshold.
