In some embodiments, the cord houses both the cable for supporting the luminaire in a suspended orientation as well as the electrical wires or connectors for electrically connecting the luminaire to a power source. In some embodiments, the mounting system is designed to ensure that the cable bears the entire weight of the luminaire and that the connectors bear no weight of the luminaire. The mounting system can include a pan that is mounted to the mounting surface and a rotatable joint positioned within the pan. The cord is attached to the rotatable joint. Rotation of the rotatable joint within the pan enables the cord to extend at nadir regardless of the angle of the mounting surface and without kinking of the cord.
