  • Patent number: 7429000
Abstract: Increased confidence in, and acceptance of, cordless hand-held scanners may be obtained through a cordless hand-held scanner with improved user feedback. In an illustrative embodiment, the state of one or more indicators is changed as a result of feedback from a coupled host processor. The indicators are set to a first (or pending) state when a scan is performed, and remain in the first state up until the time the host feedback is received. The indicators are set to a second (or successful) state if the feedback indicates the host successfully received the scan data. The indicators are set to a third (or failure) state if the feedback indicates the host failed to properly receive the scan data. Obtaining timely confirmation that the host processor has received the scan successfully leads to increased confidence in, and acceptance of, the cordless hand-held scanner.

  • Patent number: 7377437
Abstract: A targeting system for a portable image reader, which advantageously combines a number of functions including alignment, aiming, framing and range finding and provides a wide imaging range with an optimal field of view, is described. The targeting system projects a predetermined pattern having two or more components onto the target such that the components maintain a uniform distance between one another to bound the target and further vary in size as a function of their distance between the image reader and the target. The targeting system comprises targeting LED's, apertures positioned over the targeting LED's, and cylindrical lenses positioned over the apertures. With this arrangement, at least two vertical lines are projected onto a target such that the lines maintain a uniform distance apart from one another, but vary in length as a function of the reader distance from the target. This allows the operator to quickly position the imaging device over a target.

  • Patent number: 7370791
Abstract: The present invention is a manufacturing system including a hazard zone and a non-hazard zone. The system includes a storage device, located in the hazard zone, for electrically storing information. The system further includes a communication device, also located in the hazard zone, for storing information to and reading information from the storage device. In the non-hazard zone, a controller is in electrical communication with the communication device. The controller controls the system based on information read from the storage device by the communication device. To limit electrical energy passing to the communication device, an intrinsic safety barrier located in the non-hazard zone is connected between the communication device and the controller device.

  • Patent number: 7370803
Abstract: In general terms, the present invention provides a method of automatically scanning an inventory field to allow the selection of a desired item for retrieval. A camera is positioned in the crane trolley located above the field. The camera continuously performs a scan of the field displaying an image to the operator of the items being scanned. This real-time image allows the operator to distinguish between items scanned in the field. The operator can subsequently choose the desired item triggering the camera system to automatically capture desired information from the item which is in turn communicated to an inventory control system. The camera system mitigates the requirement of a second individual to communicate information between the field and the operator.

  • Patent number: 7370798
Abstract: A security mark having multiple optically orthogonal coaligned bar codes is produced using a reflection hologram visible substantially at only a first wavelength that is layered over a wavelength sensitive filter, which blocks light transmission at the first wavelength but transmits light at a second wavelength, and having beneath it an additional bar code visible through the hologram and the wavelength sensitive filter at the second wavelength. A validation means reads multiple holographic bar codes with light at the first wavelength by illuminating the hologram separately from multiple directions, and further reads the bar code beneath the wavelength sensitive filter by illuminating the mark with light of the second wavelength. By suitable choice of multi-directional and multi-wavelength illumination, multiple coaligned bar codes may be read in the same physical location with no mutual interference.

  • Patent number: 7367505
Abstract: The invention combines fluorescent QDs and methods to dispense and detect them efficiently in a compact volume for a range of optical tagging applications. Micro-fluidic devices are used for mixing water-soluble fluorescent QDs in aqueous solutions to create a multi color fluorescent nano-optical tag, and gratings are used for spreading the spectral components of the fluorescent signal leading to an improvement in optical data storage capacity over prior art methods. The spectral signature of the tag is detected by a compact read-out head with a grating spectrometer. One way is to dispense the tag within the pits of a DVD or CD using an ink-jet nozzle and exciting them by a large range of wavelengths each shorter that the emission peak. The filters have a high immunity to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and up to 41 infrared filters can be holographically recorded by spatial multiplexing of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 7367503
Abstract: A mother/daughter card non-volatile memory system includes a daughter card containing the memory and a mother card containing the memory controller and host interface circuits. The daughter memory card contains as little more than the memory cell array as is practical, in order to minimize its cost, and has an interface for connecting with a variety of mother controller cards having physical attributes and host interfaces according to a number of different published or proprietary memory card standards. Different types of memory cards may be used when the operating parameters of the memory are stored within it in a protected location, the mother card controller then reading these parameters and adapting its operation accordingly. A radio frequency antenna may be included on a surface of the card along with its electrical contacts, in order to provide a radio frequency identification function.
