Abstract: Silica composite oxide particles comprising silica and a metal oxide other than silica, the content of the metal oxide other than silica being from 30 to 50 mol %, and a coefficient of variation in the particle diameter being not larger than 30%. The silica composite oxide particles contain metal oxides other than silica in an amount of not smaller than 30 mol %, which could not be produced thus far, and feature excellent spherical shape and excellent monodispersion property.
Abstract: A process for preparing an aqueous ink-jet ink composition for MICR applications is provided comprising preparing a metal oxide pre-dispersion combined with an aqueous ink-jet ink composition, wherein the metal oxide pre-dispersion contains metal oxide pigment or particles of a very small particle size, about 0.5&mgr; or less, and exhibiting high remanence of at least 20 emu/g. The metal oxide particles may be coated with a hydrophilic coating, and the pre-dispersion may contain at least one surfactant to aid in the dispersion of the metal oxide particles. Special processing involving the use of conventional and non-conventional grinding techniques and various filtration techniques enhance the compatibility of the MICR ink-jet ink with the ink-jet equipment, resulting in superior ink life and print quality.

Abstract: A black pigment substantially free of objectionable transition metal materials is disclosed. This pigment is particularly useful for coloring glass since the absence of the transition metal gives it excellent recycling properties. The pigment is an alkaline earth (preferably strontium) iron maganese oxide material as specifically defined the in the present invention.
Abstract: A method for the preparation of pigment granules includes mixing at least one pigment selected from the group consisting of iron oxide and chromium oxides with 1-25 wt. % water to form a damp powder. The damp powder is then pressure extruded through at least one die to form granules. The granules are then dried so that the final water content of the granules is less than about 1%, crumble and sieved to form the final product.

Abstract: A particulate hydrous mineral suitable for use as an opacifying pigment, filler or extender has a shape factor which is greater than S, where S is defined by Equation 1 as follows:
S=(d50/0.036)+20 Equation 1;
where d50 is the mean particle size of the particles of the mineral measured in microns. The particulate mineral is preferably a kaolin, which is particularly suitable for use in aqueous matt paint compositions.
Abstract: The present invention relates to pigment mixtures in the form of a dispersion or powder, consisting of at least two components, where component A comprises coated or uncoated BiOCl pigments in the form of a powder or dispersion, and component B comprises pearlescent pigments, platelet-shaped, needle-shaped or spherical colorants and/or fillers, and to the use thereof in paints, coatings, printing inks, plastics, powder coatings, plastic films, for the finishing of seed and in particular in cosmetic formulations.
Abstract: The present invention relates to shoe bags useful in laundering processes, especially for laundering of shoes, particularly leather-containing shoes, such as athletic shoes. The shoe bags of the present invention are preferably used in combination with compositions for treating one or more shoes in need of treatment, and methods and articles of manufacture employing same to treat the shoes prior to and/or during and/or after washing the shoes for imparting a desired benefit to the shoes such as cleaning and/or conditioning and/or disinfecting and/or deodorizing.

Abstract: Improved methods for producing titanium dioxide slurries. The output from a micronizer is passed through a condenser to condense the steam and form an aqueous slurry of titanium dioxide, which can in most cases then be further concentrated as desired or which can be sold or used without further concentration, instead of passing the micronizer output to apparatus for separating the TiO2 from the steam, as is currently practiced in the art. The resultant slurry from the condenser is in a further refinement preferably sent to an agitated storage tank together with dispersant and anti-settling compounds to aid in preventing settling of the titanium dioxide solids out of the slurry. To help facilitate condensation of the steam/pigment mixture sent to the condenser, a portion of the condensed slurry is in yet a further refinement pumped from the slurry storage tank to a heat exchanger. The output from the heat exchanger is then fed to the condenser to facilitate the condensing of the steam in the condenser.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a process for preparing calcium carbonate pigment from calcium oxide and/or calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide in the presence of water. According to the invention, the starting materials are reacted in fluid state containing at least 20 parts of volume of gas for each part by volume of suspension formed by water and solid substances, and the amount of water is essentially equivalent to the amount which is evaporated during the reaction together with the amount left in a calcium carbonate product which behaves like a powder. By means of the present invention, PCC in powder form can be prepared without the product first having to be separated from a slurry.
