Abstract: A path timing detecting method and a base station are provided which can improve the accuracy of detecting the path timings and check an increase in the processing load in the random access in a mobile communications system. First, the method identifies the effective path timing range using a preamble, followed by detecting effective path timings in the identified path timing range at reception of a message, enabling the method to carry out detection of the path timings at accuracy higher than a conventional method that detects the paths using only the preamble. Besides, identifying the searching range at the reception of the preamble makes it possible to reduce the processing load as compared with a method that detects the path timings from the entire searching range corresponding to a cell radius.

Abstract: A method and system for performing call admission control in wireless communication systems is disclosed. Resource units required by a new user are assigned based on an outage probability of each uplink timeslot. The outage probability of each timeslot is updated as the resource units are assigned so that each resource unit assignment results in the lowest possible contribution to total outage probability. Once all of the resource units are assigned, the total outage probability is computed based on the resource allocation. If the total outage probability is below a predetermined value, the new user is admitted. If the total outage probability is above the predetermined value, the new user is rejected.
Abstract: A cellular radio system comprises a multitude of base stations (101-106, 201-204, 211-212, 501-504) for offering a radio interface to mobile terminals (205, 215, 508). The radio interface is used for communicating general information to the mobile terminals and arranging for dedicated communication between a certain mobile terminal and the cellular radio system. For imposing restrictions to the operation of the mobile terminals on at least one isolated, geographically defined restricted area (107, 108, 200, 213) the system comprises a certain first base station arranged to transmit, similar to said general information, information about the nature of the restrictions applicable on said area to the mobile stations.
Abstract: Techniques to search for a gated pilot reference in a wireless communication system. In one method, an overall code space in which the pilot may be found is partitioned into a number of groups of code sets, with each code set representative of all possible chip offsets of a specific PN sequence. The groups are ordered based on the likelihood of detecting the pilot in each of the groups. The groups of code sets are then used to search for the pilot, one group at a time, starting with the group most likely to result in successful pilot acquisition and ending with the group least likely to result in successful pilot acquisition. The search is terminated upon successful acquisition. The pilot search may be performed using detect, dwell, and pull-in substages. The detect substage for one group may be performed in parallel with the pull-in substage for another group.

Abstract: A distributor of prepaid wireless services provides a prepaid card representing an amount of prepaid wireless service that may be applied to any of a plurality of wireless service providers. Prepaid cards applicable to any of several wireless service providers are sold at retail points of sale and activated at the time of purchase. The card is then registered with a universal host where the card owner enters the card account number, PIN and the wireless device telephone number for which the prepaid service is to be applied. The universal host automatically selects one of the plurality of service providers in response to the phone number. The purchased prepaid service is then enabled for the wireless device corresponding to the phone number.
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of scheduling the time of transmission of one or more GPRS paging blocks in a cell of a cellular communications system, the paging blocks initiating communication to a mobile terminal in a cellular communications system, comprising calculating the transmission time of the paging block, or the transmission times of the paging blocks, in dependence on:
(i) the number N determining which control channel carries the paging blocks of a given terminal;
(ii) the number M of GPRS paging blocks on the control channel;
(iii) the number KC of control channels in the cell of the cellular communications system; and
(iv) the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number of the mobile terminal.
The scheduling of the time of transmission of the one or more GPRS paging blocks in the cell of the cellular communications system may even out the distribution over time of the transmissions.
Abstract: The advantages of optimal routing are somewhat limited by the tariff requirements requiring that optimal routing must not cause the call to be more expensive to any of the subscribers participating in the call. If the bills of both the calling and the called subscriber are paid by the same company, for example, it is in the interest of the company to minimize the total cost of the call, i.e. the sum of the bills of subscribers A and B. In this invention a condition for bypassing the tariff requirement for direct routing is specified. The calls can be routed directly, for example, within a prespecified user group.
Abstract: A wireless station user is provided with a unified messaging protocol that enhances the currently available messaging capabilities of SMS. The user is provided with the capability to compose at least one distribution list for SMS messages. The user is also provided with the capability to send messages to at least one distribution list on a user determined, periodic basis. The user is further provided with the capability to send messages containing content obtained from external sources, and to send those messages periodically to at least one distribution list, where the content of the messages is automatically updated prior to sending the periodic message.
Abstract: A system and method for matching first and second mobile communications devices are provided. Preference or profile information associated with the first and second mobile communications devices is transmitted to a central server for matching the first and second devices. Location information and transmission statuses of the first and second mobile communications device are also transmitted to the central server. Data related to the location of either device is transmitted to the other device depending upon the matched statuses of the mobile communications devices and the location and transmission status information associated with the mobile communications devices.

Abstract: An arrangement and a method with which wireless terminal devices which can usually be reached via a call number of one individual network computer can also be reached when they are located in the wireless communication area of a base station that is connected to another network computer. To this end, connection information is retrieved via a mobility server, and a connection setup to a corresponding network computer in whose radio area the wireless terminal device is located is controlled via that mobility server. The wireless terminal device delivers information, which is transmitted to the mobility server and from which, together with additional information from the network computer or the base station, this server is able to derive the information for the connection setup to the wireless terminal device.
Abstract: A method and system for performing a pre-reserved handover in a mobile communciation system is suggested, wherein an additional handover preparation step is performed by determining at least one candidate base station in advance, to which handover is likely to be performed. An additional downlink connection to the at least one candidate base station is established before handover execution is performed. Thereby, proper handover can be ensured for cell environments in which a serving cell disappears very quickly from a mobile station.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an arrangement and a method to render the handover-related signalling traffic in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)-based communication system more effective by reducing the amount of handover-related signalling traffic that must be sent between user equipment and the network. The arrangement comprises, i.a., a delay unit at least in the user equipment or in both user equipment and an appropriate network unit. The method comprises, i.a., the steps of releasing a communication link to the radio base station of a candidate cell while keeping information about the neighbor cells of said candidate cell for a delay period that is indicated by said delay unit. Accordingly, if a communication link shall be re-established to said candidate cell, its neighbor cells are only retrieved if said a delay period has expired.

Abstract: A method and apparatus (system) for providing forward-link channel-frequency allocation for multiple-satellite cellular communications networks is disclosed. The system has a centralized ground-operations control center that provides bi-weekly minute-by-minute allocation plans for geographically-defined service areas. This enables each service area to set its diversity policy in accordance with the requirements of the government regulators and customer preferences within the service area. The system has a user model having a frequency re-use pattern, a channel allocation model for modelling the power allocated to each channel, and a gateway channel model for allocating channels in accordance with the user model and the channel allocation model. The allocation is made for each satellite of the plurality of satellites. The traffic allocation induces an operating frequency for each of the one or more links in each satellite of the plurality of satellites.
