  • Patent number: 5758497
Abstract: An apparatus for silencing and catalytic treatment of gases has an air-tight casing connected to an exhaust inlet pipe and to an exhaust outlet pipe, acoustic compartments, monolithic bodies, and a diffuser element. The diffuser element is connected to the inlet pipe, or further downstream within the casing. The diffuser element distributes the gases evenly across the inlet face of the monolithic bodies. The diffuser element is a guide baffle or plate and a juxtaposed stagnation baffle or plate, which causes both flow stagnation in front of the stagnation plate and the gases to flow radially within the diffuser element. The diffuser element has apertures which are pervaded by partial flows of the gas and are adapted to provide additional recovery in the gas flow passing through the diffuser element. The geometry defining the fluid flow field within the diffuser is designed to prevent flow separation from the contour walls of the diffuser.

  • Patent number: 5758564
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for securely attaching existing central aluminum or steel adaptors for air brake actuators to existing steel service brake housings, existing steel emergency brake housings, or both without major modification to either housing or the adaptor. An annular shoulder with an elongated annular flange above it is provided in the steel brake housing, and the aluminum adaptor is provided with a small outwardly extending annular lip. A flexible diaphragm is first placed directly on the shoulder of the steel brake housing. The aluminum or steel adaptor is then placed on top of the diaphragm such that the annular lip of the adaptor fits inside the annular flange of the housing. A slightly deformable annular steel piece is then placed around the aluminum adaptor so that it comes to rest against the annular lip while also touching the annular steel flange of the housing. One or more breaks may be provided in the annular steel piece to facilitate placing it over the aluminum adaptor.

  • Patent number: 5746107
Abstract: A pneumatic-controlled device for a vacuum brake booster having a hollow piston which retains a tubular shut-off member. The tubular shut-off member interacts with a stationary seat and a movable seat to define a chamber within the hollow piston when the movable seat is in an actuation position. An orifice formed in the tubular shut-off member places the chamber in communication with a passage defined between the stationary and movable seats to reduce hysteresis experienced by movement of the movable seat.

  • Patent number: 5746054
Abstract: In an exhaust expansion chamber or tuned pipe of a two-cycle engine in a watercraft, variable amounts of water are injected, thus cooling the temperature within the expansion chamber and matching the sonic wave speed with that of the correct rpm of the motor. Thus, by regulating the temperature of the exhaust gases in the tuned pipe with water, the efficiency of the two-cycle engine at varying revolutions per minute, is improved.

  • Patent number: 5743093
Abstract: An annular inward turned flange and a plurality of ribs are integrally molded on an inner peripheral surface of an cylindrical portion formed at an upper portion of a reservoir for a master cylinder. The ribs extend from a lower surface of the flange and are disposed in a distributed manner in a circumferential direction of the flange. An annular flat surface area is formed on an upper surface of the flange, and a tip end of a working oil filler is placed into close contact with the annular flat surface area. Thus, when a working oil is filled under pressure into the master cylinder and its output hydraulic pressure circuit through the reservoir by the working oil filler, the urging force from the working oil filler can be reliably supported, and the deformation of the reservoir by a filling pressure cannot be produced.

  • Patent number: 5732549
Abstract: In a method for checking the conversion capability of a catalytic converter, in particular a precatalytic converter associated with internal combustion engines of motor vehicles, the checking is undertaken through the use of a temperature measurement immediately downstream of the catalytic converter. Initially the temperature at the beginning and at the end of a predetermined idling phase is measured for a predetermined number of idling phases, following an overrun phase in predetermined operating states of a motor vehicle with an internal combustion engine. Then the difference of the temperature measurements for each idling phase is formed. The sum of all of the temperature differences and the sum of the duration of the idling phases are formed and subsequently a quotient of these results is formed. This quotient determines an average gradient.

  • Patent number: 4300630
Abstract: A heat exchanger element has a metal tube with fins disposed radially and in rows, to increase the heat exchange surface. The improvement of the invention is that the fins are of elliptical cross section and are arranged in rows which are equally spaced, the major axes of the respective cross sections of the fins in a row being parallel, and being parallel to or at 90.degree. or at 45.degree. to the tube axis, each fin in a row being staggered with respect to the corresponding fins of the adjoining rows. For welding such fins to the tube, there is used a hollow electrode having its inner cavity of substantially cross-like shape and corresponding to the combined outline of two fins having the major axes of their cross section inclined at 90.degree..
