Patent number: 4585023Abstract: A packing resistant valve has a gate rotatably mounted within an angled valve body and an inlet face of the gate defines a concave recess for inducing eddy currents in fluid flow impinging thereon. The eddy currents direct fluid flow away from the valve body, reducing the tendency of the fluid to accumulate within the valve body. Because the valve body is angled, material tends to drain from the body under the influence of gravity. Also, the angled configuration results in the formation of an air pocket within the valve body, precluding packing therein. In one embodiment, a mechanical seal is provided to preclude fluid leakage across the valve stem. In a further embodiment of the invention, a diverter valve assembly is disclosed, which includes a diverter plate for preventing the impingement of fluid against the closed valve disk.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1984Date of Patent: April 29, 1986Inventor: Edward M. Patent number: 4583569Abstract: A ram-type blowout preventer having a removable seal insert contained in an insert cavity formed in the forward end of the ram body. Each seal insert includes an elastomeric body which forms an inner seal portion having a forward seal face and two outer seal portions which extend laterally into slot openings in the ram body. In each seal face is set a rigid cup which defines a cup-shaped cavity. When the rams are brought together to close the valve the two cups join together rim-to-rim to form a grease chamber between the seal forces.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1985Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Inventor: Arthur Ahlstone

Patent number: 4582293Abstract: There is disclosed a ram type blowout preventer in which the chambers in which the rams are received and for movement between opened and closed positions are automatically vented to the bore of the preventer housing above the closed rams, as the rams are moved to open position, in order to equalize pressure across the ram and thus facilitate its opening. When the rams are moved to closed position, this vent is closed so that well pressure beneath the closed rams has access through a groove between the ram and the ram chamber to the chamber behind the closed rams so as to assist operating fluid in maintaining them closed. The stem which connects a piston of a hydraulic system for operating the rams is hollow and so arranged as to be pressure balanced whereby there is substantially no force due to well fluid pressure resisting closing movement of the rams due to the extension of the rod sealably through an opening in a wall separating the ram chamber from the cylinder of the hydraulic system.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1982Date of Patent: April 15, 1986Assignee: Koomey Blowout Preventers, Inc.Inventor: Marvin R.
