Patent number: 9422684Abstract: A beach erosion mitigation device is provided that includes an elongated, tubular member configured to be tethered to the shoreline and attenuate wave energy. The tubular member comprises a corrugated construction having enclosed air pockets that afford buoyancy. The ends of the tubular member are open, while along its length are disposed a set of overflow openings and a set of venturi openings. The venturi openings receive incoming water from the breaking wave and direct it axially along the interior of the tubular member. The overflow openings and the open ends allow water to escape prior to the next wave arrival. The device is placed alone, or in groups, along a shorefront to directly receive the energy of breaking waves. The energy thereof is attenuated by the structure of the device and via its redirection therethrough, thereby combating beach erosion caused by storm swells and high energy waves.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2014Date of Patent: August 23, 2016Inventor: Sloan Danenhower

Patent number: 9382683Abstract: The system, method and apparatus for installing a piling generally includes a hollow piling having an inner surface and an outer surface with the piling having a lower end with a friction collar secured about the lower end. The friction collar is manufactured to have an inner surface wherein the inner surface includes portions with various diameters. The friction collar is placed over the lower end of the piling such that the lower end of the piling is aligned with an intermediate portion of the inner surface of the friction collar. A tapered die is pressed into the bottom of the piling to expand the lower end of the piling outwardly such that it extends into the intermediate portion of the friction collar. This secures the friction collar to the end of the piling. Optionally, an end cap may be placed over the piling and/or friction collar.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2013Date of Patent: July 5, 2016Inventor: Timothy P. Heady

Patent number: 9382846Abstract: A sealing element for sealing a gap between two components is provided. The sealing arrangement may be a seal arrangement of a gas turbine system, wherein the sealing element is elongate along a main line and has a contoured cross section in a corrugated center region. In cross section, the sealing element is directed along the main line and may be deformed in a direction substantially orthogonally with respect to the main line. In order to provide a wear-resistant, long-lasting sealing element with a particularly efficient blocking action, it is proposed that the seal teeth of the corrugation have a virtually rectangular cross-sectional contour, the tooth height of which seal teeth is between 10% and 40% of the sealing-element thickness which may be measured parallel to the tooth height.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2011Date of Patent: July 5, 2016Assignee: SIEMENS AKTIENGESELLSCHAFTInventor: Mirko Milazar

Patent number: 9267602Abstract: A seal assembly between a rotor and a stator is disclosed. In one embodiment, the seal assembly includes: a rotor; a stator positioned around the rotor; and a plurality of seal leaves positioned between the rotor and the stator, the plurality of seal leaves circumferentially stacked around the rotor to define a seal ring between the rotor and the stator, wherein gaps between adjacent seal leaves are partially filled, such that contact faces and residual gaps are between adjacent seal leaves, wherein the contact faces generate friction to dampen vibrations during operation. Such damping effects still allow the compliant motion of the seal leaves with minimal leaf vibration. Also, thicker and more resilient leaves may be applied with reduced leakage through the root gaps.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2012Date of Patent: February 23, 2016Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Yuefeng Luo, William Edward Adis, Hrishikesh Vishvas Deo

Patent number: 9267353Abstract: Backup rings are disposed on opposed sides of a sealing element. The backup rings are initially bow shaped in the run in position. Opposed ends of the bow shape are brought together to extend the extrusion barriers and compress the sealing element. The relative axial movement that brings the opposed ends of the bow shape together results in radially extending the bow shape. The bow shape is reformed into a teardrop shape that extends radially beyond a pinch location created by relative axial movement of adjacent support members coming closer together. A sealing element extends radially during the deployment of the extrusion barriers and is contained between them. The extension of the extrusion barriers allows conformance to surface irregularities in the surrounding tubular or wellbore wall.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2011Date of Patent: February 23, 2016Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: YingQing Xu
