  • Patent number: 11871988
Abstract: A device is provided for accurately mapping a tumor embedded in healthy tissue by using a probe ion that emits detectable light in response to the probe ion being bound to the tumor. An exciting laser beam is cleansed of light frequencies that excite the probe ion bound to the healthy tissue by using intracavity quenching that eliminates the wavelengths that excite the probe ion bound to the healthy tissue. A resulting emission from the probe ions bound to the tumor is photo-detected to illuminate the tumor and the periphery of the tumor. In one embodiment, the illumination of the tumor and its periphery is used to guide a surgical laser to accurately excise the tumor with a minimal loss of healthy tissue.
