Patent number: 10108719Abstract: A system and method operates on a client device and acquires a suspect list of user products based on information derived from the client device. The system normalizes the list, and the user confirms the accuracy of the product list. The user product list is sent to a server where the user product list is compared to other lists using collaborative filtering techniques. The collaborative filtering techniques determine products of interest for the use and the level of interest of the user. The system computes a similarity measure based upon the number of similar products that match the user's product list and rankings provided by the user and others. Demographic and behavioral data may also be used in performing the comparison and the similarity measure. The system acquires editorial rankings of products from other users and provides a ranked list of recommended products based upon the editorial rankings.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2011Date of Patent: October 23, 2018Assignee: CBS Interactive Inc.Inventors: Scott Bedard, Greg Kasavin, Patrick Cashman Andrus

Patent number: 10089691Abstract: Methods and systems for detecting inaccurate insurance claims associated with a loss event are provided. An insurance provider may receive loss event data associated with the loss event from a variety of sources. The insurance provider may also receive an insurance claim submission from the claimant customer that indicates an insured property and a claimed amount of damage to the insured property. The insurance provider examines the loss event data to estimate an actual amount of damage experienced by the property as a result of the loss event, and compares the actual amount of damage to the claimed amount of damage. Based on the comparison, the insurance provider may approve the insurance claim, deny the insurance claim, or flag the insurance claim. The systems and methods thus aim to reduce fraudulent or otherwise inaccurate insurance claim filings.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2013Date of Patent: October 2, 2018Assignee: STATE FARM MUTUAL AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE COMPANYInventor: Michael K. Patent number: 9990613Abstract: Introduced here is a technology that enables a bill payer, who is an account holder at a financial institution (e.g., a bank), to send a bill payment to a bill payee by submitting, via a financial application of the financial institution, the bill payee's identifier and a bill payment amount, where funds for the bill payment amount are transferred directly to the bill payee substantially instantaneously upon the bill payer's request. The technology involves communication between a computer system of a financial institution (“financial institution system”), a mobile financial application installed on a bill payer's mobile device, and a third-party, remote computer system of a payment service (“PSS”). Upon receiving the identifier and amount from the financial institution system, the PSS identifies payment card information of the bill payer and the bill payee, and executes, or triggers execution of, the transfer of funds for the bill payment.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2014Date of Patent: June 5, 2018Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Anish Bhatt, Charles Kimble

Patent number: 7885890Abstract: A credit approval and authorization system includes a credit request device, such as a terminal, located in a sales location, such as a store. The credit request device is operable to receive customer-related information, including a credit request, and to communicate the customer-related information to a credit analysis module. If the credit request is approved by the credit analysis module, the credit analysis module generates a conditional offer and the credit request device directs the customer to a point of sale system, such as a cash register, within the sales location, for manual verification of the customer's identity by an employee of the merchant. If the conditional offer is accepted and the identity of the customer is verified at the point of sale system, an activation module operates to establish a credit account. The system also includes an authorization module operable to determine whether to authorize use of the credit account to make a purchase.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2007Date of Patent: February 8, 2011Assignee: HSBC Finance CorporationInventor: Scott Haertel
