  • Patent number: 6318259
Abstract: An apparatus and method for supplying emulsion ink to a printing plate on a printing press is disclosed. The apparatus includes an ink feed and recirculation system and associated control system to quickly and reliably form a high quality emulsion ink. The control system utilizes both feedback and feedforward control strategies. The recirculation of the emulsion ink ensures that the emulsion ink remains stable and makes it possible to reformulate the emulsion ink, if necessary, without waiting for the exhaustion of all of the emulsion ink that is in need of reformulation.

  • Patent number: 6309216
Abstract: A curing system for a photohardenable material is disclosed having an electrically powered light source and a variable power supply electrically connected to the light source. During calibration, a photocell determines the power output of the light source and produces an output signal representative thereof. A control circuit then controls the illumination of the light source by the power supply. This control circuit includes a comparator which compares the power output signal from the photocell with a target value and then varies or increases the power from the power supply to the light source up to a maximum power output whenever the power output signal from the photocell is less than the target value. Following calibration, the control circuit also activates the power supply for a time period sufficient to obtain a substantially constant energy output from the light source per light activation.

  • Patent number: 6302020
Abstract: In a device for engraving screen-based impression cylinders, particularly for intaglio printing, by means of an engraving element in an electronic engraving machine, an engraving element is controlled by an engraving signal which engraves a series of wells into the rotating impression cylinder line by line. The wells are arranged according to a screen defined by presettable engraving parameters, and their engraving depths represent the engraved tone values. To engrave the entire surface area of the wells, the engraving element moves in a feed motion along the impression cylinder in the direction of the axis of the impression cylinder. The screen geometry is determined by the peripheral speed of the rotating impression cylinder and the feed motion of the engraving element.

  • Patent number: 6295928
Abstract: A printer includes a printer carrier having a surface for receiving ink for transfer printing onto a carrier material, such as paper. Areas of the surface print carrier are ink attracting and others are made ink repelling. The ink repelling areas are formed by providing the surface with a layer of a substance in a solid phase, such as water in the form of ice. The ice layer repels the ink as it is applied so that the ink is only held on the surface of the print carrier at the areas that are ice free. The ice layer is formed by cooling the surface using a cooling mechanism to form a coating of frost due to condensation. A surface tension reducer for water is coated on the surface prior to cooling the surface. A laser or other radiation emitter structures the ice layer to form the print image.
