  • Patent number: 8913107
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for converting a two dimensional (2D) image for three dimensional (3D) display. In one embodiment, a minimum depth for the 3D image is set to pixels in a bottom portion of the received 2D image. If the 2D image includes an object limiting the maximum image depth, then the maximum depth of the 3D image is set based on a location of the object in the 2D image. If the 2D image does not include an object limiting the maximum image depth, then the maximum depth of the 3D image is set to pixels in a top portion of the 2D image. A continuous depth function is generated from the minimum depth to the maximum depth and is used to generate a stereoscopic image from the 2D image.

  • Patent number: 8891609
Abstract: Embodiments include systems and methods of measuring a blockiness level in video data that has been encoded and decoded. In one embodiment, a Q-value is calculated that indicates the blockiness level of a decompressed image. The Q-value can be based on a block map having indicators corresponding to each of a plurality of pixels in an input image, each indicator signaling if a block edge is present at the corresponding pixel location in the input image, and also based on block locations indicative of the alignment block edge locations in the input image. The Q-value can be calculated in a vertical direction and a horizontal direction with respect to the input image. The Q-value is determined based on a flatness measurement of pixel values around certain considered pixels in the input image. The Q-value can be provided to a deblocking filter to improve the performance of deblocking the input image.

  • Patent number: 8855468
Abstract: A method of generating and using indexing information for video content is presented. In the method, an index stream for a video stream is generated at a video content transmitter. The video stream includes video frames, and the index stream includes an index for each of at least some of the video frames within the video stream. The video stream and the index stream are transmitted from the video content transmitter to a video content receiver, which receives and stores the video and index streams. Further, at the video content receiver, the index stream is processed to locate the video frames within the video stream that are associated with at least some of the indexes of the index stream, and at least some of the located video frames of the video stream are presented to an output device under control of a user of the video content receiver.

  • Patent number: 8849095
Abstract: A system is provided that facilitates achieving a goal associated with a particular video asset. The system may provide an interface through which a user may specify control parameters that are to be the targets of testing, and a goal or combination of goals. The system may control a controller that performs experiments in an attempt to identify optimal values, relative to the specified goals, for the control parameters. The optimal values may be determined and tested on a per-individual-video asset basis. Further, the controller may generate multiple sets of optimal values for a given video, where each set is associated with a different combination of request attributes. To estimate the optimal parameter values for one video, the controller may use usage information collected for that video, as well as usage information collected for similar videos.

  • Patent number: 8837918
Abstract: A video recording apparatus compresses video data so that a bit rate converges to a target bit rate while keeping a minimum image quality and records the compressed video data. The video recording apparatus (exemplified by a recording and reproducing apparatus (10)) comprises a compressing portion (exemplified by a transcoder (13)) which compresses the video data while executing a rate control including a change of a quantization step so that a bit rate in a predetermined period converges to a target bit rate; a recording portion which records the compressed data in a recording medium; and a total rate calculation portion that calculates a total bit rate of a result of compression of the video data by the compressing portion from the start of the compression to the present time.

  • Patent number: 8804829
Abstract: The present motion description technique provides a technique for defining a motion description offline. The motion description can then later be extracted from a multimedia representation and adapted to various multimedia-related applications in a manner that not only reduces the processing for motion estimation but also provides high compression performance during an encoding/transcoding process. The motion description technique employs a motion alignment scheme utilizing a hierarchical model to describe motion data of each macroblock in a coarse-to-fine manner. Motion information is obtained for motion vectors of macroblocks for different partition modes. The resulting motion information is compressed based on correlations among spatially neighboring macroblocks and among partition modes to form the offline motion description.
