  • Patent number: 6446321
Abstract: A process and machine to make double-walled pipe to be connected end to end, wherein each pipe includes inner and outer tubes arranged coaxially with a ring-shaped space between them except at a connecting area at the end of the pipe where the outer tube is longitudinally retracted with respect to the inner tube. An end-wall of the outer tube is deformed to close off the ring-shaped space by the gradual application of pressure to its wall by means of a series of bars spaced in a ring around a connecting area and tilted over in a radial direction by a crown that is fixed with respect to the outer tube and onto which the bars are attached in an articulated manner.

  • Patent number: 6438817
Abstract: A hand operated tool which aids in securing a cover to a vehicle or other object is presented. The cover installation tool of the present invention includes at one end handles comprising a pair of opposing members disposed at an angle with respect to each other and hinged where the opposing members intersect. The handles may have an ergonomic shape such that the tool is easy to grasp and operate. Additionally, the handles may include a rubber or plastic coating to provide a secure gripping surface and comfort to the user. At an opposite end of the tool, a pair of opposing jaws are configured to fit around a snap head and to engage the material. As such, the cover can be installed without applying lateral forces to the snap head and damaging the material adjacent the snap head.

  • Patent number: 6427312
Abstract: A control system and method for automatic fastening machines wherein a multi-axes motion controller is utilized in place of the conventional PLC or CNC control to provide for virtually an immediate change in system response when the systems feedback devices indicate the need for variance. The major advantage of the process control approach of the present invention is that all system feedback information is controlled via a single on board processor thus eliminating any communication lag associated with multi controller applications. This also provides for an improvement in fastener installation cycle time. An additional advantage to the approach of the present invention is the elimination of many mechanical hard stops and their respective electrical position switch indicators, which in turn reduces the chance for machine breakdowns resulting in a greater increase in productivity.

  • Patent number: 6427322
Abstract: A registration mechanism has a datum unit and a bolster movable toward and away from the datum unit. First, second, and third pins are mounted to the bolster. At least one spring resiliently biases the pins outward from the bolster. A pallet is supported by the pins between the bolster and datum unit. The pallet has first, second, and third sockets aligned with respective pins. The pallet has a registering face facing the datum unit. The registering face is disposed opposite the sockets. The pallet is movable by the bolster toward the datum unit from a lowered position. In the lowered position, the registering face is spaced from the datum unit and respective pins and sockets are spaced apart. In a first intermediate position, the registering face is spaced from the datum unit, and the sockets rest freely on respective pins. In a second intermediate position, respective sockets and pins are pressed together in partial counteraction of the resilient biasing.

  • Patent number: 6427309
Abstract: Method of forming a compression coupling between a fitting and a tube inserted into the retaining section of the fitting. The method involves use of a shaped part formed so that, during insertion of the tube into the fitting, the sealing ring set into an annular retaining groove of the fitting is not damaged by the sharp, outer edges at the front end surface of the tube. Before or during the insertion of the tube into the fitting, the sealing ring is elastically outwardly deformed from the inner contours by means of at least one installed shaped part. The tube end is then inserted up to a contact surface, which forms the interior boundary of the retaining section of the fitting. There upon, the parts are pressed together by cold deformation of the parts. The method and the shaped parts are installed preferably in sanitary engineering and are used wherever liquids or gaseous media are carried through tubes.

  • Patent number: 6397449
Abstract: A frame member of rectangular cross section with rounded corners is formed by expansion of a tubular blank within a die cavity having an inner portion of corresponding cross section and an outer transition portion which is of smoothly continuously curved cross sectional profile elongated substantially parallel to the larger dimension of the rectangular section. An outer portion of the tubular blank is deformed to correspond with the continuously curved cross sectional profile and is sealed by a resiliently compressible sealing element of corresponding profile through which fluid pressure is applied in order to expand the blank. By matching the profile of the transition portion to the rectangular inner portion, the transition portion can be made shorter and considerable savings of materials and resources can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 6381821
Abstract: Emitter barb installation tool 20 has driving mechanism 24, emitter barb feeder magazine 26 and pipe support 22. Pipe support 22 holds and supports a pipe 5. Feeder magazine 26 holds and feeds emitter barbs 10. Feeder magazine 26 places one of the emitter barbs 10 into a driving position. Driving mechanism 24 drives the emitter barb 10 from the driving position towards and into the pipe 5 held and supported by the pipe support 22. After the one barb 10 has been driven into the pipe 5, the pipe 5 with installed barb 10 is released from the tool 20. Another emitter barb 10 in the feeder magazine 26 is then automatically located into the driving position for the next installation into a pipe 5. This installation process automatically and continuously repeats for insertion of additional emitter barbs 10. Individual emitter barbs 10 are detachably coupled to one another to form an emitter barb cluster 74.

  • Patent number: 6370752
Abstract: A method for repositioning or repairing holes in metal substrates such as metal components used in jet engines and the like. The hole to be repositioned or repaired is enlarged and a recess is formed at each end of the enlarged hole. A deformable metal insert is then inserted within the enlarged hole and then subjected to physical forces so as to cause it to deform and frictionally engage the walls of the recesses and the enlarged hole so that the insert becomes axially fixed therein. A new, repositioned hole can then be formed in the fixed insert that extends completely therethrough.
