  • Patent number: 4392291
Abstract: Disclosed herein is method for assembling a pair of slide fastener stringers each having spaced sections in continuous rows of scoops and an apparatus for the same. The leading edge of the scoop row in the leading stringer is detected by a probe inserted into the guide groove of the binder member for the scoop row. The engagement of the leading edge and the claw of the probe retards the progress of the leading stringer thereby retarding the rotation of the feed roller for the leading stringer while increasing the speed of the rotation of the other feed roller for the trailing stringer, which is connected to the first feed roller through a differential transmission mechanism. After both of the stringers are brought into right alignment for exact engagement in the binder member, the claws disengage from the leading edges of the scoop row in the stringers and come out of the spaced sections. In this condition, the spaced sections in the stringers are detected individually by detecting lever means.

  • Patent number: 4387507
Abstract: A method and apparatus for expanding tubes radially, particularly useful for anchoring tubes within a tube sheet in preparation for a subsequent hydraulic swaging operation. The apparatus includes at least one primary expander and at least one seondary expander. The secondary expander is axially positioned within the tube and has a larger cross-sectional area than the primary expander when considered with reference to a plane passing transversely through the tube. The expanders are compressed axially, thereby producing outwardly directed pressure against the interior surface of the tube. The primary expander produces the greatest pressure against the tube due to its smaller cross-sectional area. Axial compressive forces can be applied to the expanders by a draw bar that passes through them.

  • Patent number: 4387497
Abstract: A cylindrical bushing is positioned over the shank of a screw member prior to forming threads on the shank. After the threads are formed, the outside diameter of the threads is greater than the inside diameter of the bushing so that the bushing is held captive on the shank of the screw. A cylindrical sleeve is then inwardly deformed so as to be permanently secured to the bushing. The opposite end of the sleeve facing away from the head of the screw shank extends beyond the bushing and forms a skirt which can be peened over the peripheral inner edge of a panel opening to secure the sleeve to the panel, thereby holding the screw captive to the panel. The end of the bushing next to the underside of the screw head has an increased internal diameter portion for accommodating a spring serving to bias the head and shank away from the bushing so that when the screw is unfastened, it will pop outwardly and release quickly any member to be secured to the panel.

  • Patent number: 4383362
Abstract: This invention selectively opens and closes the paired clamping members of a flexible skirt hanger by imparting predetermined forces to predetermined parts of said hanger in a predetermined manner. The hanger is held at a work station in a frame during a predetermined work operation which causes said forces to be applied. A pneumatically extended rod causes one of said paired clamping members to move in a predetermined rotational direction while a portion of said frame limits rotations of the other of said clamping members in said predetermined rotational direction, thereby effectively imparting a force to said other clamping member causing it to move in a direction opposite said predetermined rotational direction. The opposite rotational motion of each of said clamping members causes them to open to receive a garment therebetween. Means are provided to close said clamping members on said garment by removing said forces and enabling said clamping members to tend to resume their equilibrium position.

  • Patent number: 4376335
Abstract: A method of mounting a timing gear on a crankshaft by shrinkage fit. At room temperature, a bore of the timing gear has smaller diameter than that of a mounting portion of the crankshaft. A guide jig having a mounting key portion and a guide key portion is secured to the mounting portion with the mounting key portion being in register with a key way formed therein, which is angularly indexed with respect to a pin portion of the crankshaft. After being heated, the timing gear is mounted on the mounting portion in a predetermined place by sliding it over the mounting portion while engaging a key way of the timing gear with the guide key portion of the guide jig. Then the guide jig is detached from the mounting portion and the timing gear is cooled to effect shrinkage fit thereof on the mounting portion of the crankshaft.

  • Patent number: 4372025
Abstract: An opening is formed in a tank bottom and a mounting flange for a bottom outlet valve is attached to the tank bottom extending into this opening. This valve mounting flange contains fastener openings. A vertically extending light source is removably attached to the mounting flange, for example with mechanical fasteners. This light source is shined upwardly into the tank and indicates a reference point on the internal surface of the tank top for locating a nozzle opening. This reference point is marked, and a top opening is then formed in the tank shell by workmen located in the tank, usually after rotating the tank 180.degree.. If the tank has been rotated prior to forming the top opening, the tank is again rotated 180.degree. to locate the top opening at the top of the tank. An optional reinforcing plate is then welded to the outside surface of the tank surrounding the top opening. This reinforcing plate contains a reinforcing plate opening.

  • Patent number: 4368570
Abstract: A method of attaching top and bottom stops to a slide fastener chain at one and the same stage of manufacture. The fastener chain is moved along a path until a trailing end of a preceding pair of coupling element groups arrives at a first fixed die, by which time leading end portions of a succeeding pair of coupling element groups are disengaged from each other. With the trailing end of the preceding pair of coupling element groups retained at the first die, an adjacent pair of opposed blank tape portions is sagged until the endmost disengaged coupling elements arrive at a second fixed die spaced a predetermined distance from the first die along the path. Finally, a bottom stop and a pair of top stops are attached concurrently and respectively to the trailing end of the preceding pair of coupling element groups at the first die and to the disengaged endmost portions of the succeeding pair of coupling element groups at the second die. An apparatus for carrying out this method is also disclosed.
