  • Patent number: 4665712
Abstract: A condenser receives hot compressed refrigerant from the heat pump compressor and transfers heat to water in water heater, refrigerant flows from the condenser through a pressure reducer to an evaporator coil in which baffles define first and second air flow paths across the coil parallel to the coil gradient. In one path the temperature of air flowing across the coil is reduced while the air gives up heat to the refrigerant. The other air flow path heats air passing across the coil. A multiplicity of pressure reducers are provided in the coil to progressively drop the temperature of the refrigerant from one end of the coil to the other. A supplemental coil can be used in conjunction with the second air flow path to heat air further. The supplemental coil may receive hot refrigerant directly from the condenser.

  • Patent number: 4665840
Abstract: An improvement for use in a mechanical stoker with a coal stove is disclosed. The improvement device is used with a stoker, generally including a hopper, operatively connected to a small stove having a fire box forming an ash pit. The fire box, through its sides sloping downward from the hopper, supports a ramp. The lower portion of the ramp is a perforated fire grate, while the upper portion is a plate that extends through the hopper bottom and into the stove. A fan effecting a forced draft through the grate is operatively connected to a fan motor. The improvement comprises a wiper bar which overlies generally the width of the plate. The wiper bar oscillates about the longitudinal center line of the plate to feed coal or other solid fuels from the hopper onto the grate. The oscillation of the wiper bar is effected by eccentric connection to a gear motor.

  • Patent number: 4665866
Abstract: An improved, grid-type flow distribution baffle for both providing lateral support for an array of heat exchange tubes and for generating a sludge-sweeping water current within a steam generator is disclosed herein. Generally, the improved baffle comprises a plurality of grid members for defining an array of square, tube-capturing cells, wherein each wall of the cell is closely adjacent and contactable with the side of the tube. Each of the cells is circumscribed by a flange at one of its ends which includes a substantially circular opening for allowing the tube to extend through the cell. The flange includes four flat portions spaced 90.degree. apart for rendering the flange flush with the center portion of each of the square walls which form the cells of the baffle. These flat portions allow the flange to closely circumscribe the tube without coming into contact with it, thereby avoiding "point contact" between the flange and the tube.

  • Patent number: 4662540
Abstract: A medium to high viscosity liquid flow detector and alarm sub-system for use with apparatus for automatic liquid dispensing machines for mastics, sealants, adhesives, and the like, comprising a liquid pressure sensing device disposed in the liquid flow path of the liquid dispensing gun of the machine. The liquid pressure sensing device derives an output electrical signal indicative of the instantaneous liquid pressure in the liquid flow path. A differentiating circuit differentiates the liquid pressure indicating signal to derive a rate of change in fluid pressure signal. The rate-of-change signal is supplied to an indicator for signalling the existence of an undesired rate-of-change in liquid pressure condition and is indicative of a bubble or void in the liquid mastic, sealant, or the like being dispensed.

  • Patent number: 4660510
Abstract: A model steam generator for simulating the environment inside a nuclear steam generator in order to monitor the condition of the heat exchange tubes of the nuclear steam generator is disclosed herein. The model steam generator includes an electrically-powered thermosyphon heating means for circulating a flow of vapor and condensate through the sample tube in a closed loop. The thermosyphon includes riser tubes which are concentrically disposed within the sample heat exchange tube along a substantial portion of the longitudinal axis thereof for both directing a stream of steam into the inside walls of the heat exchange tubes, and for insulating this flow of steam from the resulting stream of condensate which flows down from the inner walls of the sample tubes. The elimination of the counter-current forces between the stream of steam and the downflowing film of condensate prevents the formation of heat-obstructing ripples of condensate on the inner walls of the sample heat exchange tubes.

  • Patent number: 4655146
Abstract: An apparatus and method for continuously treating material for performing such functions as burning, roasting, smelting, coking, melting, high temperature chemical reactions and the like in a combustion chamber wherein the chamber or an extension thereof, is tuned to permit combustion gases therein to resonate and to thereby effect maximum combustion efficiency. In particular, the invention concerns controllably varying the geometry of the combustion chamber, such as the length of a pipe or tubed section thereof in accordance with the variables of combustion occuring therein, so as to optimize efficiency of combustion and the reaction which takes place between the burning material and the material being treated or reacted on. In addition to effecting such reactions, the apparatus is also operable to effect the transfer of the heat of combustion to a heat transfer medium, such as water for generating steam or other form of heat transfer medium to maximize the utilization of the energy generated.

  • Patent number: 4655147
Abstract: A plant for combustion of a particulate fuel in a fluidized bed in a combustion chamber has the fuel supplied into the bottom of the combustion chamber by means of a pneumatic transportation system via nozzles. Fuel for the plurality of nozzles is transported through a duct to a distributor and from there via individual conduits to the nozzles of the combustion chamber. These conduits include flow-inhibiting, pressure-drop generating means, by means of which a pressure drop is generated between the distributor and the combustion chamber. These pressure-drop inducing means influence the velocity of flow and hence the transport capacity of the transport gas so that a desired, normally uniform, distribution of fuel to the bed is secured.

  • Patent number: 4651680
Abstract: A reduced wreath condensation boiler. A feed duct for fresh oxygen-carrying air taken from the atmosphere and an exhaust duct for exhausting diluted combustion products to the atmosphere downstream from the extractor fan are essentially parallel, but not coaxial, minimizing heat exchange. A first heat exchanger is disposed above the heating body for providing heat exchange between the fresh air from the feed duct and the combustion products from the heating body prior to dilution. Deflectors channel a portion of the air from said first heat exchanger to sweep the free space situated between the heating body and its airtight enclosure, while the remainder of the air from the first heat exchanger is directed towards the burner. At least one calibrated orifice injects the air which has swept over the heating body into the exhaust duct for the combustion products upstream from the extractor fan. This boiler reduces the wreath of water vapor where the flue gases are exhausted to the atmosphere.
