Patent number: 6181328Abstract: A method and system in a data-processing system having a touch-sensitive display unit wherein touch-sensitive icons displayed within the touch-sensitive display unit may be calibrated according to physical characteristics associated with a particular user. Touch-sensitive icons are displayed within a touch-sensitive display unit, such that upon activation by a user, the touch-sensitive icons initiate data-processing operations. Thereafter, a user is prompted to enter a particular sequence of data utilizing the touch-sensitive icons. Physical characteristics associated with the user are then analyzed while the user is entering the particular sequence of data utilizing the touch-sensitive icons. Finally, in response to analyzing the physical characteristics, the touch-sensitive icons are configured such that the sensitivity of the touch-sensitive display may be raised or lowered according to the physical characteristics associated with the user. The touch-sensitive icons may be composed of touch-sensitive keys.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1998Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Johnny Meng-Han Shieh, John Maddalozzo, Jr., Gerald Francis McBrearty

Patent number: 6181330Abstract: A video display device for displaying a wide range of video signals which allows the user to freely set the screen display width and position. A request for adjusting the horizontal display width, vertical display width, horizontal display position, and vertical display position is made through a key circuit, and a microcomputer determines the state of the key circuit. The microcomputer then recalculates the horizontal expansion rate and vertical expansion rate of a scan converter, and send recalculated data to the scan converter and a PLL circuit. The scan converter and the PLL circuit converts signals to the number of picture elements displayable on the video display device in response to a request for adjustment, and changes the phase of the enable signal which indicates a display period of the video display device to adjust horizontal and vertical display positions.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1997Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hirokatsu Yui, Hiromitsu Torii, Yoshikuni Shindo

Patent number: 6181329Abstract: One embodiment of the writing instrument described herein comprises a pen-like device containing three accelerometers and three gyroscopes. Data from these sensors are processed via an Euler transform. Prior to using the writing instrument, the user holds the writing instrument in multiple predefined positions and sensor readings are taken. The sensor readings are mapped to the corresponding predefined positions. In addition, the sensor readings are compared to expected sensor readings to compensate for environmental variations such as altitude or temperature as well as for the possible tilt of a writing surface. The sensor readings are interpolated to map sensor readings other than those at the predefined positions to other writing instrument positions. When the user writes with the writing instrument, sensor outputs are used to track the writing instrument to define strokes made by the user.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1997Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Assignee: Ricoh Company, Ltd.Inventors: David G. Patent number: 6177922Abstract: This invention is directed to a method and apparatus for producing video signal timing for a display device that has a display format different from the input video format. It also provides a method and apparatus for producing video signal timing in cases where the input video line rate and display output line rates are not the same. Furthermore, a method and apparatus are provided for synchronizing the display output line rate to the input line rate so that the source video line input rate can sustain the rate at which the input lines are processed to generate display video lines using a minimum amount of memory buffer for a variety of display processing methods. Another aspect of the present invention provides a method and apparatus for synchronizing display output timing to input video timing such that both are locked in terms of frame rate, but skewed in terms of frame phase, in order to accommodate latency incurred by processing of source video data to generate the display video data.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1997Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Assignee: Genesis Microship, Inc.Inventors: Harold Schiefer, Steven Hanna

Patent number: 6169529Abstract: A circuit and method for time multiplexing a voltage signal for controlling the color balance of a flat panel display. Within an FED screen, a matrix of rows and columns is provided and emitters are situated within each row-column intersection. Rows are sequentially activated during “row on-time windows” by row drivers and corresponding individual gray scale information (voltages) are driven over the columns by column drivers. When the proper voltage is applied across the cathode and anode of the emitters, electrons are released toward a phosphor spot, e.g., red, green, blue, causing illumination. Within each column driver, the present invention provides selection circuitry for driving a first voltage signal during a first part of the row on-time window and a second voltage during a second part of the row on-time window. The lengths of the first part and second part of the row on-time window can be adjusted for a given color, to adjust the color balance with respect to that color, e.g.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1998Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Candescent Technologies CorporationInventors: Ronald L.
