  • Patent number: 5005777
Abstract: A seat belt retractor includes a spool driven by an electric motor. Seat belt webbing is wound around the spool. A worm wheel rotates with the spool and meshes with a worm that is axially movable. A set of electrical brushes is axially movable with the worm along the shaft. The set of electrical brushes is electrically coupled to a control circuit through a set of conductor strips. The set of brushes slide along the set of conductor strips as the worm moves axially. In response to movement of the brushes along the conductor strips, the control circuit provides signals to control the motor and, thus, the spool. When an occupant initially withdraws the webbing to buckle the webbing, the tension force acting on the webbing moves the worm axially. In response, the motor is actuated to rotate the spool in the belt withdrawal direction and provide motorized assist for the webbing withdrawal.

  • Patent number: 5006698
Abstract: A method and apparatus for protecting a selective access system against fraudulent use of a magnetic card having a confidential card. Each cade (CM) is associated with a class corresponding to a zone of a memory (PROM). The number of classes is equal to the number of zones and is substantially less than the number of cards (CM) which may be presented. At each failure to input a confidential code, one of the bits is modified in the corresponding memory zone.

  • Patent number: 4993657
Abstract: A seat belt retractor has a first relatively strong spring and a second relatively weak spring which bias the spool of the retractor on which the seat belt is wound in a belt retraction direction. A mechanism is actuatable to block the bias of the first spring from acting on the seat belt so that only the second spring acts to bias the seat belt in the belt retraction direction. The first spring acts between the retractor frame and a ratchet wheel and the second spring acts between the ratchet wheel and the spool of the retractor. A pawl is movable into a first position to block the ratchet wheel from rotation in the belt retraction direction so that only the second spring acts to bias the seat belt in a belt retraction direction. A cam is rotatable relative to the retractor spool and controls movement of the pawl.

  • Patent number: 4993661
Abstract: An optical tape leader detection system includes a light source and a light detector. In a video cassette using opaque magnetic tape, the tape follows a defined tape path and has a transparent leader at each end thereof, with the free ends of the leader being mounted to first and second tape winding hubs. A light transmissive cassette cover supports the first and second hubs, and a source receiving aperture in the cassette cover is adapted to receive the light source. A window is provided in the cassette cover, allowing light emitted from the light source and passing through the transparent leader portion to reach the light detector along a defined light path. One or more light pipes are mounted in the cassette cover and aligned to define portions of that light path, thereby controlling the source and amount of light with respect to the light detector.

  • Patent number: 4993653
Abstract: A rotatably mounted support arrangement comprises two receiving claws having substantially V-shaped grooves. Diametrically opposite these receiving claws there are provided two clamping claws which also comprise substantially V-shaped grooves. A winding core comprises on the inner side thereof an annular rim or rib having a substantially V-shaped configuration. This annular rim or rib is supported in the grooves of the receiving claws and is pressed against the latter by means of the clamping claws. For releasably clamping the winding core, the clamping claws can be brought from an idle or ineffectual position, in which the clamping claws do not bear against the winding core, into an operative or effectual position in which the clamping claws clamp or fixedly hold the winding core together with the receiving claws. The winding core with the product core or wound package thereof is clamped at the supporting arrangement and rotatably supported conjointly with the latter.

  • Patent number: 4983496
Abstract: A method of making and of reading markers at control positions on a length of magnetic tape having light-impeding coatings on opposed sides of a transparent tape substrate. Markers are recorded by directing focused beams to control positions along longitudinal areas of the magnetic tape. The beams have an energy sufficient to ablate the coatings, but to leave the tape substrate intact. Raster scanning of the control position provides rectangular markers at prescribed positions. The longitudinal extent of these rectangular markers generally conforms to the ANSI Standard for end of tape and beginning of tape marker patterns, while the transverse extent of the markers is greter than the longitudinal extent.

  • Patent number: 4982910
Abstract: A power returnable tape rule has an improved connection between the inner end of the power spring and the hub. The hub has an axially elongated passage therethrough with shoulders at the axial ends thereof which seat in notches formed in the edges of the spring extending therethrough. These shoulders are located intermediate the transverse dimension of the passage and are inclined upwardly towards the axial ends. Bosses on the opposing wall of the passage limit the clearance in the passage and thereby the opportunity for the spring to be lifted from the shoulders.

  • Patent number: 4983817
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for reading a luminescent and substantially transparent bar code 1 on a background surface 2 whose reflectance may vary over the coded area. Light 7 scans (70), and excites luminescence 8 in, the bar code 1. The light 7 also reflects (9) without luminescence from the background surface 2 of the bar code 1. A first electrical or optical signal 11 is provided (4) responsive to the reflected nonluminescent light 9, and a second electrical or optical signal 10 is provided (4) responsive to the luminescent 8. Typically the first signal 11 is processed (5) to provide a third signal 31 that varies with background reflectance substantially as does the second signal 10; and the second and third signals 10, 31 are combined (5) to provide a fourth signal 12 that is substantially independent of background reflectance in the coded area, and which is decoded (6) to provide the desired reading.
