Patent number: 5880915Abstract: The reconfiguration of a magnetic write head minimizes cracking at the ABS. This is accomplished by selectively reconfiguring the front edge of the insulation layer that defines the zero throat height (ZTH) so as to increase the volume of the overcoat layer which interfaces with the reconfigured edge. The front edge of the ZTH-defining insulation layer has a central portion which is centered with respect to the second pole tip and first and second lateral portions which are on each side of the front portion and parallel to the ABS. The front edge portion is recessed from the ABS a distance appropriate for defining the ZTH between the first and second pole pieces of the write head. The first and second lateral edges are further recessed into the head so as to increase the volume of the overcoat layer between the ABS and the first and second lateral edges.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Edward Hinpong Lee, Peter Beverley Powell Phipps

Patent number: 5870261Abstract: A magnetoresistive head includes a magnetoresistive element and a for-bias soft magnetic film attached to the magnetoresistive element via a spacer. The for-bias soft magnetic film has an axis of easy magnetization which is set to be non-perpendicular to a direction of a bias magnetic field applied to the for-bias soft magnetic film. The bias magnetic field is generated by a sense current flowing in the magnetoresistive element. With this structure, the for-bias soft magnetic film can be easily magnetically saturated so that a reliable characteristic of the magnetoresistive head is ensured. The axis of easy magnetization of the for-bias soft magnetic film may be inclined to the direction of the bias magnetic field by an angle of equal to or less than 60 degrees. Alternatively, the axis of easy magnetization of the for-bias soft magnetic film may be inclined to the direction of the bias magnetic field by an angle of equal to or less than 15 degrees.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1997Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventor: Fumiaki Beppu

Magnetic head suspension assembly having load beam with high resonant frequency and shock resistance
Patent number: 5870252Abstract: A load beam attached to an actuator arm of a magnetic head suspension assembly includes a base section, a midsection and an arm section. An air bearing slider is disposed at the distal end of the arm section. The midsection joins to the base section at a junction boundary which is wider than any of the other sections, and is also positioned at a distance away from the actuator arm. The load beam bends at the midsection starting at the junction boundary. The bending of the load beam allows the slider to fly proximally close to a disk surface during normal operation. The base section, secured to an actuator arm, is integrally formed with ribs. The base section provides a firm platform for the bending of the load beam and effectively shortens the effective length of the load beam, which affords higher vibrational resonant frequency. The suspension assembly also can sustain high shock separation impact.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Read-Rite CorporationInventor: Kevin Patrick Hanrahan
