  • Patent number: 7202064
Abstract: Several novel PHA polymer compositions produced using biological systems include monomers such as 3-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxypropionate, 2-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxyvalerate, 4-hydroxybutyrate, 4-hydroxyvalerate and 5-hydroxyvalerate. These PHA compositions can readily be extended to incorporate additional monomers including, for example, 3-hydroxyhexanoate, 4-hydroxyhexanoate, 6-hydroxyhexanoate or other longer chain 3-hydroxyacids containing seven or more carbons. This can be accomplished by taking natural PHA producers and mutating through chemical or transposon mutagenesis to delete or inactivate genes encoding undesirable activities. Alternatively, the strains can be genetically engineered to express only those enzymes required for the production of the desired polymer composition. Methods for genetically engineering PHA producing microbes are widely known in the art (Huisman and Madison, 1998, Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews, 63: 21–53).

  • Patent number: 7198805
Abstract: Humic acid salts are produced, with a high output of useful products, by a liquid-phase oxidation of the mixture of an alkaline agent with a lignin-containing plant raw material having the total content of dry substances of 12–20 %, said oxidation being carried out in two stages. In a first stage, pre-oxidation is carried out at a temperature of 50–190 DEG C. and a pressure of 0.5–3 MPa associated with simultaneous treatment with an oxygen-containing gas until a pH of 10.5–12 is reached. The second stage, i.e. oxidation is carried out in the similar conditions at a temperature of 170–200 DEG C. until a pH of 8.5–10 is reached. The by-product of cellulose production by a sulphite process, i.e. concentrated solutions of lignosulphonate or lignin is used as a lignin-containing plant raw material, said lignin being a by-product of hydrolysis production being continuously oxidised by air oxygen in two stages.

  • Patent number: 7195788
Abstract: The foliage and stems of plant species from the family Rosaceae, genus Prunus, yield natural pesticides when macerated. Hydrodistillation of macerated plant biomass yields a concentrated solution of organic volatile compounds that act synergistically as a natural pesticide. Volatile compounds liberated from Prunus biomass include 2-propanol, hexanal, trans-2-hexenal, 1-hexanol, cis-3-hexenol, mandelonitrile, benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, hydrocyanic acid and others. These compounds may be removed from the distillate and reformulated to form a standard concentrated solution, with benzaldehyde, mandelonitrile and hydrogen cyanide being the major components. The extracts may be used as a soil treatment or soil fumigant for soil-borne pests. They also may be formulated for application as solutions with or without a surfactant or formulated as powders for foliar treatment.

  • Patent number: 7182950
Abstract: The present invention relates to nano-sized self-assembled structured concentrates and their use as effective suitable carriers for transferring active components into the human body. The nano-sized self-assembled concentrates are composed of an aqueous phase, an oil phase, a surfactant a co-solvent and co-surfactant. The formed nano-sized self-assembled structured concentrates may be in the form of an aqueous continuous phase, an oil continuous phase or a bicontinuous phase, and may thus be diluted to any desired extent in either oil or water maintaining their structure and the active material comprised within the nano-sized self-assembled structured concentrates.
