    Abstract: In a network having transaction acceleration, for an accelerated transaction, a client directs a request to a client-side transaction handler that forwards the request to a server-side transaction handler, which in turn provides the request, or a representation thereof, to a server for responding to the request. The server sends the response to the server-side transaction handler, which forwards the response to the client-side transaction handler, which in turn provides the response to the client. Transactions are accelerated by the transaction handlers by storing segments of data used in the transactions in persistent segment storage accessible to the server-side transaction handler and in persistent segment storage accessible to the client-side transaction handler.

    Abstract: Data stored on a server are synchronized with corresponding data on a plurality of client computers. To facilitate synchronization of the data, the data for a class of nodes on the server are provided with a version identifier (a serial number) that is incremented each time the data are modified on the server. During synchronization, the version identifier for the data stored on the client is transferred to the server, and the nodes stored on the client are updated by downloading nodes modified on the server since the last synchronization. Data on the client that have been modified are then uploaded to the server. Collisions between nodes of the data that have been modified on two different clients are detected, and a user is given an opportunity to resolve a collision.

Logical agents represent the application connection and are managed by a logical agent scheduler and are passed within the gateway using domain socket pairs. Gateway agents are dedicated to identified tightly coupled XA transactions to provide tightly coupled XA transaction support for DBMS systems which do not provide such support directly. The domain socket pairs in the gateway are assigned to logical agent schedulers and are available in a domain socket pool. A wait queue is provided to buffer logical agents when connection to the server is not available or where there are no domain socket pairs available in the domain socket pool. The wait queue is itself implemented as a domain socket pair.

    Abstract: An efficient mechanism for sending messages without the use of intermediate copies (i.e. without the staging of data) is provided. In particular an interface specification which allows use users of a transport protocol is defined so as to lend itself to efficient implementations. The interface specification is a complete and robust set of user functions usable within systems desiring reliable and efficient zero copy transport protocols. Two methods are provided to accomplish the implementation of an efficient zero copy protocol. The first method is especially useful in systems where the network device has limited capabilities in terms of hardware, message fragmentation and message reassembly. An additional RDRAM memory allows data to reside in an adapter while handshake operations take place between an adapter and a node so as to specify the final destination of the data. The second method takes advantage of network devices with advanced features which are exploited for maximum efficiency.

A system of rate-distortion based packet selection and organization is used to maximize the quality of streamed media files that have been encoded using any conventional scalable encoder. Media file quality is maximized for available bandwidth by scoring packets comprising encoded media files based on their contribution to the quality of a reconstructed media file, then preferentially transmitting those packets having the highest scores. In addition, where packets are lost during transmission, those packets that will provide the maximum rate-distortion decrease, are preferentially retransmitted prior to other lost packets which, if transmitted in the same time slot, would provide a lesser rate-distortion decrease.

The source device delivers the datagram from a source port that designates the transport priority and the destination device receives the datagram at a destination port that also designates the transport priority. A current server capacity of each of the inter-network servers is determined.
