  • Patent number: 7274626
Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording medium for thermo-magnetic printing has an ultra-high recording density and is resistant to thermal decay of magnetization. An intermediate layer of the medium is provided between a first recording layer using a low-noise Co alloy ferromagnetic substance and a second recording layer using a ferrimagnetic substance (e.g., a rare-earth element-transition metal compound) having a compensation temperature below an operation ambient temperature. A magnetic field is applied thereto to form a magnetization pattern on the first recording layer. It is then heated-up to be printed onto the second recording layer, which has a higher coercivity at the ambient temperature, and a recording field is suitably set to form a magnetization pattern only on the first recording layer. The magnetization pattern is printed from the first recording layer to the second recording layer.

  • Patent number: 7272089
Abstract: Prior to a main record, a trial write of data in an optical disc is performed in accordance with the characteristics between a record velocity and an optimum record power (Steps S2 to S4). The quality of a signal reproduced from the trial-written data is measured (Step S5). It is judged from the measured quality of the reproduced signal whether the predetermined velocity is a recordable velocity satisfying the characteristics between the record velocity and the optimum record power (Step 5). The main record is executed in accordance with the judgment result.

  • Patent number: 7272102
Abstract: A ridge waveguide having a recessed ridge forming an isolated tip at a terminal end of the waveguide's aperture efficiently couples light into a spot adjacent to the tip in a medium below the terminal end of the waveguide which is significantly smaller than the light's wavelength. The waveguide is used to heat a recording medium via the small spot for heat assisted recording or to pattern substrates by photolithography with line width exposures that are significantly smaller than the wavelength of light. The body of the waveguide may also be recessed away from the medium in an area surrounding the waveguide's aperture to further confine the energy emerging from the waveguide to the small spot adjacent the tip in the medium.

  • Patent number: 7266052
Abstract: A data processing method of a virtual optical disk applied in an optical disk system is provided. The method includes steps as follows: Firstly a sound source determining procedure is executed. If the sound source is not from a virtual optical disk, a pre-processing and a buffer playing process are executed, and also a state changing process is executed while the buffer playing process is executed. According to a result of the state changing process, one of the following three steps is executed: the sound source determining procedure, the pre-processing procedure, and an idle determining procedure. If the system is not idling when executing the idle determining procedure, the buffer playing process is thus executed. Otherwise, a state assessment process is then executed. In accordance with the state assessment process, a storage capacity planning procedure, a write process or the state changing process is then executed.

  • Patent number: 7251200
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for reproducing optical disks. An optical head irradiates linearly polarized light onto an optical disk. A change of a polarization orientation of light that is transmitted or reflected from the optical disk is detected in accordance with a recording signal on the optical disk. The apparatus moves the optical head into a pre-determined portion of the optical disk where write-once information is stored, and reproduces the write-once information after detecting a change of a polarization orientation of light that is transmitted or reflected from the pre-determined portion.

  • Patent number: RE39832
Abstract: In carrying out PWM-recording on optical disks, RESYNC BYTES including a bit compensation part, RESYNC detection part, and bit synchronization part are periodically inserted in the recorded data code stream. After encoding and at the time of decoding, RESYNC BYTES are detected by detection of the RESYNC detection part. The decoder is initialized by detecting the position of the bit synchronization part, and decoding is performed satisfactorily free from error. With this configuration, even for synchronization bytes having a comparatively long portion of consecutive code values, bit resynchronization is enabled free from mis-detection caused by peak shift. Even with the recording and reproducing characteristics with an un-symmetrical unerased area of the mark and space parts, the RESYNC detection part is fixed to either mark or space and RESYNC BYTES with little influence on an unerased area can be realized.
