  • Patent number: 6415132
Abstract: A technique for controlling a wireless communication network to provide for blossoming capacity to a relatively high capacity state and/or wilting capacity to a relatively lower capacity state. Connections in progress with active subscriber units are properly handled without the need to send explicit handoff commands from the base stations. The cell sites may be advantageously implemented with cable microcell integrators that comprise remotely deployed transceiving equipment that are interconnected to centrally located base transceiver station equipment via a broadband cable distribution network. In an initial relatively low capacity state, adjacent cells are operated at the same carrier frequency such that they form simulcast groups so that subscriber units traveling in adjacent cells will operate with the same radio channel. As demand increases, the power level of an auxiliary radio transceiver is gradually increased while the power level of the original transceiver in the cell is gradually decreased.

  • Patent number: 6397083
Abstract: Weighting coefficients for a phased array antenna are iteratively refined to optimal values by a ‘bootstrapped’ process that starts with a coarse set of weighting coefficients, to which received signals are subjected, to produce a first set of signal estimates. These estimates and the received signals are iteratively processed a prescribed number of times to refine the weighting coefficients, such that the gain and/or nulls of antenna's directivity pattern will maximize the signal to noise ratio. Such improved functionality is particularly useful in association with the phased array antenna of a base station of a time division multiple access (TDMA) cellular communication system, where it is necessary to cancel interference from co-channel users located in cells adjacent to the cell containing a desired user and the base station.

  • Patent number: 6385460
Abstract: A power management system for a mobile unit wherein the frequency of scanning a neighboring cell may be controlled. A mobile unit consumes power in standby mode by periodically scanning the base station in each neighboring cell to determine which base stations are providing a usable signal. When the signal provided by the mobile unit's servicing base station diminishes, the mobile unit informs the cellular network of the base stations providing usable signals to assist in the handover. By detecting the rate of change of the signal strength received from a base station, the mobile unit may change the scanning rate of each neighboring cell. Alternatively, the mobile unit can estimate the relative speed it is traveling through a cell. If traveling slowly through the cell or if the signal strength is not changing over time, the need for a rapid handover diminishes. The mobile unit may also increase the scanning rate if traveling rapidly through the cell.

  • Patent number: 6381476
Abstract: In a portable radio terminal having a liquid crystal display, when a radio data receiving period overlaps the timing of outputting a liquid crystal alternating signal to the liquid crystal display, the outputting of the liquid crystal alternating signal is deferred until the radio data receiving period ends, whereby the angle of the liquid crystal is not inverted until the radio data receiving period ends. Therefore, during the radio data receiving period, there does not occur a noise caused because of the inversion of the angle of the liquid crystal, with the result that the receiving sensitivity is not deteriorated.

  • Patent number: 6374099
Abstract: A high priority and/or emergency overload access control system treats a wireless unit as a higher priority wireless unit when the wireless unit is attempting to access a wireless communications system with a high priority call, such as an emergency call. For example, the overload access control system can recognize if the wireless unit is attempting to initiate a call to an emergency number. If so, the wireless unit can perform a persistence test as an emergency class (e.g. overload class 10-15) wireless unit in attempting to access the wireless communications system. Thus, the wireless unit will experience an increased probability of passing the persistence test and thereby reducing the persistence delay in attempting to access the wireless communications system with the emergency call.

  • Patent number: 6356751
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for allowing a mobile station involved in a single-hop satellite call to complete a conference emergency call. One of the mobile stations involved in the single-hop satellite call activates an emergency call feature, which triggers one or both of the mobile stations to perform a call release and call re-establishment procedure. When one or both of the mobile stations performs call re-establishment, the call is marked as an Emergency Call to prevent the mobile stations from being reconnected in a single-hop call. After re-establishment, the mobile station that activated the emergency call feature transmits an Emergency Setup message to the MSC/VLR, which initiates a call connection to the Emergency Call Center (ECC). Once the MSC/VLR completes the call to the ECC, the MSC/VLR bridges all parties together in a conference call.

  • Patent number: 6356756
Abstract: A method and system for routing calls to a wireless platform uses local number portability searches to achieve advanced intelligent network capabilities. The method and system of the present invention “ports” wireless subscriber numbers to a number for a platform providing a specific service. When a caller dials the subscriber's wireless number, a switch determines whether the number is portable. Since the number has been ported, the switch launches a query to a local number portability service control point to obtain additional routing instructions. The service control point accesses a local number portability database to determine the proper routing number. The new routing number allows calls to be routed to a service platform in the wireless network. The service control point transfers the routing number to the switch which then translates the routing number to a directory number for the platform. The call is then routed to the platform.
