  • Patent number: 4258768
Abstract: An improved fastener assembly includes an externally threaded member or bolt having a thread convolution with a relatively long trailing flank surface and a relatively short leading flank surface. An internally threaded member or nut also has a thread convolution with a relatively long trailing flank surface and a relatively short leading flank surface. The nut is grooved to provide an expandable section. When the nut and bolt are tightened, the relatively long trailing flank surfaces of the thread convolutions cause the grooved portion of the nut to expand to completely fill a hole. The opposite end of the nut is contracted to clamp against a thread convolution on the bolt. In one embodiment of the invention, a relatively short leading flank surface of the bolt extends at an acute angle to the relatively short leading flank surface of the nut to provide clearance between the internal and external thread convolutions.

  • Patent number: 4253904
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the decoration of bottles and the like at high speeds. Bottles are delivered by an input conveyor to a star wheel, which deposits them sequentially into a continuously rotating turret. The turret carries the bottles past a labelling site, where a label carrier strip is pressed into contact with a bottle surface and a label thereby transferred. The shape of the bottle is maintained during labelling by means of inflation of the bottles through an inserted nozzle. The raising and lowering of the inflating nozzle and the flow of inflating air is controlled by special valving apparatus. The motion of the label carrier strip past the labelling site is regulated by the use of rolls on a shuttle slide, which in turn is reciprocated by a second slide driven by a conjugate cam. This results in an increase of the local velocity of the carrier strip during most of the cycle, and a slowing of the strip during the balance.

  • Patent number: 4249972
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing lined latex girdles in which one end of a fabric sheath which will form the liner of a latex girdle is sewn or otherwise held closed together and slipped over an annular rectangular frame, with the closed end of the bag disposed in the middle of the annular rectangular frame. A flat form, with curved sides, is first covered with a latex film, and while tacky, is pushed through the frame, engaging the fabric liner. As the form is pushed through the frame, the liner slides over the frame, and contacts the sides of the form. When the form has been pushed completely through the frame, the liner will be supported on the form, which may then be easily withdrawn for final processing. Close tolerances between the dimensions of the form and the frame assist in providing quality control with respect to the interpenetration of the fabric liner and the latex film.

  • Patent number: 4244763
Abstract: Method for labeling objects including fruits supplied to a labeling station by an endless conveyor. Labels on a carrier tape are moved from a supply reel by a knurled roller which impresses a surface weakening pattern on each label so it will readily conform to a non-planar surface of the object. The tape is formed into a feed storage loop by an oscillatable tension regulating arm which controls actuation and deactuation of the knurled roller. An indexing tape segment passes through an indexing block in a transfer station, where each entering label is sensed by a detector. Indexing movement of the tape is initiated by an object detector on the conveyor. Indexing moves the tape around a sharp bend to strip the detected label from the tape and position it in a label holding frame.

  • Patent number: 4240485
Abstract: The side connector in a nonskid tire chain of this invention improves the invention of the herein identified copending application by providing spaced apart transverse bars, one carried by a bar-receiving member having an opening therein and the other by a bar-shaped member of substantial length slidable in the slot. Such construction provides supports for detachable elastic means extending between the transverse bars and relatively yieldingly urging the bar-receiving and bar-shaped members toward retracted position. One of the spaced bars extends between the walls of the bar-receiving member and the other projects on both sides of the bar-shaped member. The detachable elastic has a longitudinal slot so that an end portion can span each of the projections of the bar carried by the bar-shaped member and the other end portion can span the bar carried by the bar-receiving member.

  • Patent number: 4237951
Abstract: A tightener for securing tire chains about industrial tires. The tightener includes a pair of block members that are threadably engaged by a draw bolt. The draw bolt includes a tool engaging surface that facilitates attachment of a tool to turn the draw bolt about its central axis and correspondingly move the block members axially toward or away from one another. A pair of non-extensible lengths of chain are connected to each block and extend outwardly to free ends that are adapted for connection to the side rail chain of an industrial tire chain. Therefore, the tightener may be mounted with the length of chain connected to the side rail chain and the blocks and draw bolt substantially centered on the tire axis. The draw bolt may then be rotated to bring the block members axially together, pulling inwardly on the side rail chains to tighten the tire chain about the tire periphery.

  • Patent number: 4231830
Abstract: A reflective sheeting is disclosed having spaced apart cavities extending along one face and light-reflecting beads lining both wall and bottom portions of the cavities to impart a wide angle retroreflective response to incident light and improved brightness or intensity. The sheet is prepared by forming in a deformable carrier sheet a network of relatively depressed cavities having wall and bottom portions and spaced apart by intervening ridges, and then coating the wall and bottom portions of the cavities and the ridges with light-reflecting beads. After filling the cavities and covering the ridges with a solidified layer of a resinous organic matrix having a greater adherence to the beads than the carrier sheet has, the sheet is stripped away. This transfers the beads to the organic matrix and locates them in similarly shaped cavities and ridges molded in the matrix by the carrier sheet.
