  • Patent number: 8152809
Abstract: Described herein is a cranial surgery drill bit having a safety self stopping mechanism for use on bone material to prevent or repair skin erosion and infection which may result from the placement of a cap for holding the lead from Deep Brain Stimulation surgery. The surgical procedure of attaching a lead holding cap onto the bone material of a skull requires an attachment which results in no movement of the lead. Accordingly, counter boring the skull surrounding a pre-existing perforation bore so that the cap is not significantly above the surface of the skull is a technique which allows the cap user to brush hair, etc., without disrupting the attachment and placement of the lead.

  • Patent number: 8147548
Abstract: Systems and method in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention can includes an implant comprising a spacer and a frame having a central body and a helical shaped wing extending from the central body. The frame can be positioned near about adjacent spinous processes, and can be rotated and urged so that the adjacent spinous processes pass within a groove of the wing, thereby allowing the wing to be arranged on an opposite side of the adjacent spinous processes. The spacer can then be arranged over the frame so that the spacer contacts and distracts the spinous processes, thereby limiting relative movement of the adjacent spinous processes during extension.

  • Patent number: 8147497
Abstract: Disclosed is a patellar cutting jig for use in a knee joint surgical procedure. The jig grips and holds a patella in situ in spatial reference to the femur to enable the appropriate cut to be made to the patella to accurately accommodate the patello-femoral gap at the replacement knee joint. The patella jig has a referencing component that provides a landmark connection between the patella jig and the femur which enables the patella clamp of the jig to be oriented relative to the reference feature prior to gripping the patella. Thus a patella held in the clamp is fixed in the cutting jig an appropriate orientation relative to the femur prior to its resection. Cutting the patella while it is referenced to the patellar groove on the femur increases the accuracy of the resection.

  • Patent number: 8142505
Abstract: An intervertebral disc replacement has two members attached to vertebral body endplates of two adjacent vertebrae. The two members are formed with respective articulation surfaces which form at least part of an articulation arrangement. When loaded with compressive axial force, the articulation arrangement supports the vertebral contact surfaces against the compressive force to ensure a predefined minimum intervertebral spacing, and allows a range of turning motion in all directions. The articulation arrangement is formed to provide an increase in the intervertebral spacing as a smooth function of angular displacement from a neutral position over at least part of the range of motion in each direction for each direction of motion, thereby providing motion attenuation and restoring forces.
