The fabric is dried to a residual moisture content of 10 to 20 percent by weight, is pressed to remove unwanted wrinkles, and is heated at a temperature of 88.degree. to 175.degree. C. for up to fifteen minutes to cure and crosslink the durable press treatment composition and impart durable press properties to the fabric. The alkali metal cleaves mono-, di- and polysulfidic cross-linkages in the rubber vulcanizate to liberate rubber polymer having a molecular weight substantially equal to that of the rubber polymer prior to vulcanization.
