  • Patent number: 5254042
Abstract: A transmission device for a bicycle is provided including a first transmission for obtaining a forward driving force. The first transmission drives a first free wheel in conformity with movement of a first drive unit when a crank shaft is forwardly rotated. A second transmission obtains a forward driving force by converting a direction of the rotating force produced in a rotational direction of a second drive unit. The rotational direction is supplied to a second free wheel under a reverse rotation of the crank shaft. A forward driving force is obtained regardless of the rotational direction of the crank shaft, thereby improving an exercise effect.

  • Patent number: 5249628
Abstract: Casing slip joints are provided on opposite sides of a fracture initiation location to accommodate casing and formation movement during fracturing of a well. In another aspect of the invention, the fracture initiation location is provided by forming openings through the well casing and then forming fan-shaped slots in the formation surrounding the casing. Those slots are formed by a hydraulic jet which is directed through the opening and then pivoted generally about the point of the opening. These fan-shaped slots circumscribe an angle about the axis of the casing substantially greater than the angle circumscribed by the opening itself through which the slot was formed. These techniques are particularly applicable to fracturing of horizontal wells.

  • Patent number: 5248282
Abstract: A chain tensioner utilizing oil as an operating fluid comprises a housing having a vertical bore and a plunger projecting upward through an opening at the upper end of the bore and urged by a spring in the projecting direction. The plunger has an internal oil reservoir formed near its upper end, a passage leading from the reservoir to a high-pressure oil chamber formed by the housing and plunger, a check valve preventing flow from the high-pressure chamber to the reservoir, and an opening permitting flow of oil into the reservoir. A second oil reservoir, annular in shape, is formed in the housing at the location of the opening to provide an oil seal between the plunger and the wall of the bore. This oil seal prevents air from flowing between the plunger and the wall of the bore into the high-pressure chamber. In one embodiment, an auxiliary spring is located in the second oil reservoir.

  • Patent number: 5248216
Abstract: The present invention relates to a soil compactor equipped with at least one movable drum. To generate the desired compacting forces, the drum is equipped with two oppositely rotating exciter shafts which are matched to one another in their phase positions so that, if the exciter shafts are vertically superposed, their centrifugal forces act horizontally and in the same direction, thus causing a moment free horizontal force to be exerted on the drum axis, while, with the exciter shafts disposed in a juxtaposed arrangement, the centrifugal forces are amplified in the vertical direction and compensate one another in the horizontal direction.

  • Patent number: 5246406
Abstract: A torque transmission system for effecting a driving connection between laterally spaced driving, and driven shafts. A fist wheel is mounted on the driving shaft and a second wheel is mounted on the driven shaft. Each of the wheels have substantially identical pitch diameters. An endless flexible torque transmitter operatively connects the first and second wheels. A traveling insert band circumscribes and operatively engages one of the wheels at a time, and when the traveling insert band engages one of the wheels, the insert band is located radially inwardly of the endless flexible torque transmitter. The traveling insert band has leading and trailing ends located in substantially circumferentially opposed juxtaposition when the traveling insert band operatively engages one of the wheels. Mechanisms are also provided selectively to derail the leading end of the traveling insert band from that wheel operatively engaged thereby.
