Patent number: 6009674Abstract: A method and apparatus for connecting modular structures include I-beams which are placed beneath and longitudinally perpendicularly to the integral longitudinal supporting beams of the modular structures. A pair of upper plates and a pair of lower plates are positioned with respect to the upper beams and the lower I-beams, respectively. Bolts are passed through the upper plates and the lower plates, and nuts are tightened on the plates to cause the upper and lower beams to be clamped together. The plates are installed on the beams without requiring any structural modification of the beams, such as, for example, cutting, drilling, welding, or the like. Thus, the beams are not weakened by the process, and the modular structures can be readily disconnected and transported to another location for reconnection.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1997Date of Patent: January 4, 2000Inventor: Warren N. Patent number: 5996291Abstract: A loading dock comprising a dock wall including a dock opening formed by a generally horizontal upper portion of the dock wall, a resilient head pad mounted in front of the upper portion such that the head pad is positioned to be compressible between the upper portion and a back of a vehicle when a vehicle is positioned at the loading dock, and a tether member interconnecting the head pad with the upper portion. The tether member is positioned to facilitate substantially vertical movement of the head pad relative to the upper portion. The assembly can further include a substantially rigid support member connected to the dock wall. Preferably, the loading dock further includes a back pad (e.g., a resilient pad) connected to the dock wall, and the head pad comprises a front pad positioned adjacent the back pad. One portion of the tether member can be secured to the front pad and another portion of the tether member can be secured to the back pad.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1998Date of Patent: December 7, 1999Assignee: Kelley CompanyInventors: Loren K. Patent number: 5992127Abstract: A door is provided that has a first outer skin and a second outer skin. A first and second outer skins are separated by a frame to form a hollow core between the frame and the outer skins. The outer skins have molded potions that extend into the space between the outer skins. An expandable spacer is connected to the first and second skins to hold the first and second skins a predetermined distance apart. The expandable spacer has a plurality of elongated members having a width. The elongated members are each oriented substantially perpendicular to the first and second outer skins. The expandable spacer has a plurality of expandable core liners extending between the elongated members. The expandable core liners support the elongated members with respect to the first and second outer skins in a perpendicular direction. The elongated members and the expandable core liners have a reduced width portion formed therein that corresponds to the molded portion of the outer skins.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1997Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Inventor: Edward G. Patent number: 5992106Abstract: A polymer tile for forming a floor covering, comprising a perimeter wall for providing support and for enclosing a perimeter boundary for the tile. A honeycomb configuration of intermediate wall structure is interconnected between inner portions of the perimeter wall and forms recurring hexagon units of hexagon support walls of common dimension, wherein the hexagon support walls have a height common with a height of the perimeter wall for providing support for a load imposed at a top surface of the tile within an intermediate area. A plurality of ribs of lesser height than the hexagon support walls are disposed in traversing orientation between opposing vertices of the hexagon support walls, and are joined at a central axis of the hexagon units as a common load transfer point to form a tile grid defining a plurality of hexagon support walls reinforced by equilateral triangles of lesser height formed within the hexagon units of the tile.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1998Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Sport Court, Inc.Inventors: Jason D. Patent number: 5974746Abstract: A drywall tape with an attached bead allows application of mud to adjacent drywall panels not oriented right angles. The bead is carried in a lengthwise orientation by the middle of the drywall tape on the side facing away from the drywall. The bead provides left and right rails that are typically 1/16 or 2/16 of an inch in height. The drywall tape is positioned in the corner between first and second drywall panels. The blade of the application tool is supported at one corner by a lip carried by one of the rails, and at the other corner by the surface of the first drywall panel. A guide tool is inserted into a groove between the rails of the bead at the upper end of the drywall tape, and is moved downwardly in tandem with an application tool. The application tool smooths mud about one side of the drywall tape carried on the first drywall panel. The guide tool carried by the groove prevents the application tool, or any mud pushed by the application tool, from contacting the second drywall panel.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Inventor: Mark E. Patent number: 5974740Abstract: An adjustable tarpaulin (11) that can be adjusted to various predetermined lengths, and more securely fastened. The adjustability of the adjustable tarpaulin (11) is provided by having one or more sets of valances of the top layer (23, 41) and the valances of the bottom layer (27, 43). Because the valances are free on one end, the length of each of the valance side edges may be adjusted as desired and the valances provide two different pull angles to share the load of the tarpaulin. By doing so, the adjustable tarpaulin (11) enables the tarpaulin to be adjusted between two or more prefixed sizes. Moreover the adjustable tarpaulin (11) can provide the distribution of the load from more than one angle so stress and the load will be distributed over two different sets of tie points (33).Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Inventor: Peter C.
