Patent number: 5520891Abstract: Disclosed are a fixed-bed, cross-flow catalytic reactor wherein reaction heat can be exchanged against a heat exchange medium circulating indirectly through the catalyst bed, and a catalytic process comprising operation of the cross-flow reactor. The reactor comprises a catalyst bed having internally embedded banks of heat exchange tubes. An inlet distributor distributes reactants along the axial length of the bed. The distributed fluid passes through the bed in a cross-flow path wherein a catalytic reaction occurs. The reaction effluent is then collected from the bed by an outlet product collector. A heat exchange medium circulated through the internal heat exchange tubes adds or removes reaction heat as required for enhanced conversion in the reactor. Multiple heat exchange tubes can be used, and inlet and discharge manifolds are provided for distributing the circulating heat exchange medium.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1994Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Inventor: Jing M. Patent number: 5514343Abstract: A microtitration system comprises a plurality of well and a frame-like holder with apertures for receiving the wells. Each well has a bottom wall and a side wall extending upwardly therefrom so as to define an upper open end, and a depression or groove is formed in an outer surface of the well side wall at a position spaced from the bottom wall. Each aperture of the holder is at least partly defined by a resilient aperture defining means, which is adapted to enter into locking engagement with the depression or groove of a well received in the aperture. The dimensions and the shape of each aperture are such that when a well is inserted into the aperture, the aperture defining means is engaging with the outer surface of the well side wall and is pressed radially outwardly in relation to a central axis of the well till the aperture defining means may snap into locking engagement with the depression or groove formed in the side wall of the well.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1994Date of Patent: May 7, 1996Assignee: Nunc, ASInventors: Henrik B. Patent number: 5514215Abstract: A plurality of nozzles and treating liquid supplying tubes are supported by rigid support arms forming part of temperature control piping for contacting the tubes to maintain treating liquids in the tubes to a constant temperature. The support arms are pivotable about a pivot axis located sideways from a substrate, such that the nozzles are movable between a dispensing position and a standby position displaced from above the substrate. A drive arm engages and swings a selected one of the support arms to move the nozzle attached to the selected support arm, between the dispensing position and standby position. With this construction, a nozzle selected from the plurality of nozzles is reliably moved in a predetermined posture to a predetermined position, while allowing sufficient temperature control of treating liquids by the temperature controlling piping, and avoiding inadvertent dripping of the treating liquids due to deformations of the treating liquid supplying tubes.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1994Date of Patent: May 7, 1996Assignee: Dainippon Screen Mfg. Patent number: 5514337Abstract: An instrument is applied to the measurement of chemical species and concentration through the use of a chemically-sensitive coating on the eddy current coil or in the vicinity of the eddy current coil which produces a change in impedance of the probe through induced eddy currents in the coating. An eddy current or resonance circuit chemical detector is a non-contact sensor for measuring chemical species identity and concentration. The chemical detector is resilient and does not require reference electrodes. The chemical sensor is selective as a result of data available on the change in vector impedance of the probe, the change in resonant frequency of the tuned circuit, and the availability of data to construct a vector response from multiple probes having differing chemistries. The probe is used in extreme temperatures.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1994Date of Patent: May 7, 1996Assignee: American Research Corporation of VirginiaInventors: Howard P. Groger, Russell J. Patent number: 5512488Abstract: An assay for the qualitative and quantitative determination of a bioactive polysaccharide, such as acemannan, in a product, such as an aloe vera-containing product. The method uses a complexing agent to react with the bioactive polysaccharide present, if any, in the product to give a color change. The detected color change is compared with standard color changes generated by reacting the complexing agent with different known amounts of the bioactive polysaccharide, wherein differences between the color changes compared are dependent upon the presence or amount of the bioactive polysaccharide in the product. The assay can be confirmed by detecting a second color change of a different aliquot of the product with a different complexing agent.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1994Date of Patent: April 30, 1996Assignee: Carrington Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Alexis N. Patent number: 5512255Abstract: A graded temperature methanol reactor includes an inclined container containing a liquid heat transfer medium, such as water, having a varying temperature along the container. Conduits, extending through the container and in contact with heat transfer medium, conduct a feed gas having hydrogen and carbon monoxide and permit heat transfer between the feed gas and the heat transfer medium. A copper catalyst is disposed within each conduit to cause the hydrogen and carbon monoxide to react to form methanol, which condenses as the temperature decreases along the container from the upper end to the lower end. Preferably, the conduits are configured as a rotor and can be rotated relative to the container. By using this methanol reactor, methanol can be produced from a feed gas having hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a 2:1 molecular ratio, regardless of the source of this feed gas.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: April 30, 1996Assignee: Wright Malta CorporationInventor: John A. Patent number: 5510038Abstract: In drainage systems in buildings and excavations there is waste and ground water with a high dissolved material content. These mainly inorganic substances often cause the build-up of hard deposits in the water conveying parts of the drainage systems, e.g. waste water pipes. These deposits reduce the drainage cross section of the drainage systems thus preventing the water from flowing freely and thus causing back-ups which can result in considerable damage. The current processes of removing these deposits are electro-mechanical cleaning and high-pressure rinsing or abrading with water. These processes are laborious, expensive and cause interruptions in operation. It is the aim of the invention to prevent the formation of such deposits. To this end, a conditioning agent in aqueous form is added via a metering installation at one or more points in the drainage system.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1994Date of Patent: April 23, 1996Inventor: Marcel C. Patent number: 5508007Abstract: A circulating fluidized bed reactor includes a lower zone having a fluidization grid, primary and secondary air injection inlets, and fuel feed inlets, an upper zone, internal bubbling beds at the top of the lower zone collecting solid matter from recirculation internal to the reactor and delivering a fraction thereof to external bubbling bed heat exchangers close coupled with the walls of the reactor level with the internal beds. The external heat exchangers reject the solid matter into the lower zone after exchanging heat with an external fluid. The reactor is simple in structure and benefits from the advantages of bubbling external beds while maintaining conventional design in the lower zone.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Societe Anonyme Dite: Stein IndustrieInventors: Jean Vidal, Jean-Xavier Morin, Jean-Paul Tessier

Patent number: 5507920Abstract: In the preparation of vinyl chloride by thermal cracking of 1,2-dichloroethane, three distillation stages are used to distill off first hydrogen chloride, then vinyl chloride and finally entrained hydrogen chloride with vinyl chloride. If, in the last stage, entrained water is not drawn off via the bottom, it is recirculated with the top product to the first stage and causes corrosion. Removal of the water at the top of the third distillation stage, advantageously by drying, prevents the corrosion.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Hoechst AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Schwarzmaier, Peter Kammerhofer, Manfred Stoger, Helmut Kalliwoda, Ingolf Mielke
