  • Patent number: 8535310
Abstract: A medical sphincterotome and a method of its use are described. The sphincterotome has structural elements that are capable of directing a wire guide through a selected body passageway. One structural element includes a distal port and deflection member that can deflect the wire guide into the desired passageway. Another structural element includes an offset nose-shaped end that can bend towards a passageway desired to be blocked. The wire guide is prevented from entering the blocked passageway, thereby enabling the wire guide to cannulate the desired passageway. The sphincterotome also includes a cutting wire to access a patient's sphincter and perform various other medical procedures.

  • Patent number: 8500755
Abstract: A fastener delivery tool includes a loading chamber for receiving a fastener having a pair of tines overlapping one another to define a loop in a parent or relaxed state. A retaining member retains the fastener in the loading chamber. The fastener delivery tool also includes a tongue, pusher member, and an ejection track communicating with the loading chamber. An actuator causes the tongue to move to engage the tines of the fastener to transform the fastener from the relaxed state to a constrained state defining a U-shape. The actuator also causes the pusher member to release the retaining member and advance the fastener down the ejection track in the constrained state. The tool also includes a trigger for ejecting the fastener completely from the ejection track. The fastener may be used to secure a prosthetic heart valve or components thereof into surrounding tissue, e.g., within a tissue annulus.

  • Patent number: 8425548
Abstract: This invention is a device and method to occlude an aneurysm comprising: a laterally-expanding occluding member (such as a relatively-flat balloon, mesh, net, or patch) that is positioned within the parent vessel of the aneurysm and then expanded laterally; and a radially-expanding structural member (such as a stent) that is positioned within the parent vessel of the aneurysm and then expanded radially after, or concurrently with, expansion of the laterally-expanding occluding member. Expansion of the radially-expanding member presses and holds the laterally-expanding occluding member into contact with the aneurysm neck, so that the laterally-expanding occluding member at least partially covers the aneurysm neck and reduces blood flow to the aneurysm. This invention has several potential advantages over devices and methods in the prior art, especially for treatment of wide-neck and fusiform aneurysms.

  • Patent number: 8409231
Abstract: The present invention relates to a contoured scalpel handle. The contoured shape of the handle provides for increased contact area with the user's hand using a larger diameter central portion and a smaller diameter trough. The generally circular cross-section allows rotation of the angle of the blade relative to the tissue without the need to change the grip on the handle. The contoured handle can be used as an adapter sleeve in which a scalpel handle can be inserted or can include a blade mounting element on which a blade is directly mounted.

  • Patent number: 8388631
Abstract: Devices and methods for applying tension to an area of skin are provided, for example, for follicular unit removal and implant in a hair transplantation procedure. The devices may include a frame with at least two skin contact members that hold to the skin. Also disclosed are various ways to apply a force displacing the skin contact members apart, thus creating tension in the skin. The devices and methods may incorporate suction, and/or barbs or microbarbs. The frame may surround the skin area with tensile forces applied outward in multiple directions or substantially uni-directionally. Adjusting members and indicators may be provided to control and display the tensile force applied to skin. The tensioning devices and methods may be incorporated into a robotic hair transplantation system.

  • Patent number: 8377084
Abstract: A medical device and method for traversing an occlusion in a vessel includes a straightening sleeve positioned at a distal aspect of a catheter, a steering sleeve having an arcuate distal end, and a guidewire disposed through the steering sleeve. The steering sleeve has a first position in which the arcuate distal end is straightened within the straightening sleeve, and a second position in which the steering sleeve extends distally past the straightening sleeve to expose the arcuate distal end. The tip of the arcuate distal end of the steering sleeve or the guidewire can be used to pierce the occlusion. An arrangement of hub assemblies with locking mechanisms and motion limiting structures facilitates adjusting and locking the relative positions of the straightening sleeve, the steering sleeve, and the guidewire. Detent mechanisms are associated with the motion limiting structures for providing controlled incremental movement of the sleeves and the guidewire.
