  • Patent number: 6578080
Abstract: An apparatus for programming selected entries in an address filter table allows dynamic updating of address registers and eliminates the need to disable unmodified registers in arrangements including multiple registers or entries. The apparatus comprises an interface for receiving data frames from a remote station. A media access controller is provided with an address filter table capable of storing a plurality of entries. Each entry includes an address field for storing a predetermined target address, and an enable field for indicating whether or not the entry is valid. The media access controller is configured to receive each of the data frames from the interface. The media access controller examines the enable field of each entry in the address filter table to determine whether or not the entry is valid. The received data frames are then routed to a destination address based upon the target addresses stored in the address filter table.

  • Patent number: 6577578
Abstract: In a disk playback device, a driven disk guide and a fixed disk guide provide transverse movement for a disk. A pivoting arm with an engagement cavity, engages with an edge of an inserted disk and guides the disk during movement into the apparatus. A spring biases the pivoting arm toward a front of the device so that the pivoting arm is in a correct position when the disk is first inserted. As a disk is inserted into the device, the pivoting arm rotates away from a center of the disk. When the full diameter of the disk enters the apparatus, the pivoting arm rotates completely, moves into a slit disposed in the fixed disk guide, and is thereby recessed from the edge of the disk.

  • Patent number: 6574671
Abstract: A method for distinguishing recipients of electronic communication on a data processing system utilizing the recipient's electronic addresses. Electronic communication is first addressed to at least two recipients with corresponding recipient addresses. Then specific characteristics, from among a plurality of characteristics, are linked to one or more of the recipient addresses, wherein the characteristic serves to distinguish the recipient's communication from the communication of other recipients. When the communication is sent the recipient receives his communication along with the characteristics assigned it.

  • Patent number: 6574668
Abstract: Data is transmitted over a computer network from a source network component to one or more destination network components. Thereafter, one or more acknowledgements are transmitted from one of the destination network components to the source network component; and different data, which may include retransmissions, from the previously transmitted data is transmitted from the source network component to the one or more destination network components. A negative acknowledgement message from the destination network component may be transmitted to the source network component upon a failure to receive one or more of the transmitted data packets, the negative acknowledgment including packet identifications of said one or more data packets. Then data packets identified by the identifications received in a negative acknowledgement may be retransmitted before transmitting other packets. The negative acknowledgements thus indicate failed receipt of data. Positive acknowledgements indicate successful receipt of data.

  • Patent number: 6564246
Abstract: A synchronous collaboration environment that supports real-time collaboration of multiple participants, each having shared and independent views of the shared workspace. Multiple views per participant are provided. Some of the views seen by a participant can be shared views with the usual common cursor and annotation tools. The shared views need not be homogeneous, which means that for a given view, each participant can see more than just some common data in his or window for the view. What the participant sees separately from the common data can make his or her shared view different from that of other participants. The view can be different due to different data being exposed in the view. Some of the views seen by a participant can be independent views. This allows to the participant synchronous working with the shared workspace alone on his or her own. The collaboration system includes a user interface and support for aligning views including goto and overlaying.

  • Patent number: 6560634
Abstract: Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture consistent with the present invention provide an improved query server that overcomes the shortcomings of existing domain name searching techniques by performing a multitude of searches simultaneously, transparent to the user. Specifically, the improved query server searches for existing domain name records in various domains and then displays the results in a formatted manner, thus eliminating the need for a user to perform individual searches.

  • Patent number: 6529948
Abstract: A system, method, and article of manufacture are provided for retrieving multiple business objects across a network in one access operation. A business object and a plurality of remaining objects are provided on a persistent store. Upon receiving a request for the business object, it is established which of the remaining objects are related to the business object. The related objects and the business object are retrieved from the persistent store in one operation and it is determined how the retrieved related objects relate to the business object and each other. A graph of relationships of the business and related objects is instantiated in memory.

  • Patent number: 6484208
Abstract: A computer network has a number of nodes which interact with one another via messages using a network protocol, and a node may access various network resources such a remote disk drives by the network. A disk drive is mirrored so that it may be accessed via one node when the drive is actually located at another node. This mirroring is transparent to the node which originates a disk request. A high speed communications path is provided between the node which actually has the disk resource and the node from which the disk drive is mirrored; this path is usually separate from the primary network path. On the communications path between the two nodes, a packet protocol is used which conveys a minimum but adequate amount of information needed to satisfy the requirements for disk I/O to take place between matching remote disk mirror drivers on the two nodes. The packet structure minimizes the need for creating new storage objects and saving them in implementing the mirroring functions.

  • Patent number: 6477580
Abstract: A system, method, and article of manufacture are described for providing a self-describing stream-based communication system. Messages are sent which include data between a sending system and a receiving system. Meta-data is attached to the messages being sent between the sending system and the receiving system. The data of the messages sent from the sending system to the receiving system is translated based on the meta-data. The meta-data includes first and second sections. The first section identifies a type of object associated with the data and a number of attribute descriptors in the data. The second section includes a series of the attribute descriptors defining elements of the data.

  • Patent number: 6477577
Abstract: A connection substitute server substitutes a connection between a host machine having an informal address or a private address and a host machine out of an organization having a formal address and relays them. A correspondence relation between the host machine having no formal address and the connection substitute server has previously been registered as connection substitute server information in a name server. When receiving a communication request in which a host name of a connection request destination has been designated, a connection substitute correspondence client requests a retrieval of the connection substitute server information to the name server, requests a connection substitute with the host machine having the informal address or private address of the connection request destination to the connection substitute server recognized from the retrieval result, and enables a connection with the host machine which belongs to another organization and doesn't have a formal address.

  • Patent number: 6469975
Abstract: A method for controlling the speed of a sled motor for an optical disk drive, wherein the sled motor is first driven according to a predetermined target velocity profile stored in a microcomputer. Then, a frequency of a sinusoidal wave output by a Hall-effect sensor is detected and it is determined whether the frequency of the sinusoidal wave is greater or smaller than a predetermined value. The target speed is incremented by a predetermined amount when the frequency of the sinusoidal wave is greater than the predetermined value, and is decremented by the predetermined amount when the frequency of the sinusoidal wave is smaller than the predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 6470389
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for hosting a network service on a cluster of servers, each including a primary and a secondary Internet Protocol (IP) address. A common cluster address is assigned as the secondary address to each of the servers in the cluster. The cluster address may be assigned in UNIX-based servers using an ifconfig alias option, and may be a ghost IP address that is not used as a primary address by any server in the cluster. Client requests directed to the cluster address are dispatched such that only one of the servers of the cluster responds to a given client request. The dispatching may use a routing-based technique, in which all client requests directed to the cluster address are routed to a dispatcher connected to the local network of the server cluster. The dispatcher then applies a hash function to the client IP address in order to select one of the servers to process the request.
