  • Patent number: 10265194
Abstract: A surgical instrument suitable for preparing an intervertebral disc space includes an outer sleeve, an instrument head, an inner shaft, a handle, a universal joint, a coupling member, and a drive mechanism. The outer sleeve includes a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis. The instrument head defines a longitudinal axis and is disposed at the distal end of the outer shaft. The inner shaft is slidably disposed within the outer sleeve and includes a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis coaxially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the outer sleeve. The drive mechanism is coupled between the outer sleeve and the inner shaft and actuates the outer sleeve axially relative to the inner shaft, thereby setting an angle of the longitudinal axis of the instrument head in relation to the longitudinal axis of the inner shaft.

  • Patent number: 10231847
Abstract: The implant fixation systems disclosed herein include an implant manufactured with, or coupled to, one or more implant fixation devices used to secure the implant to bone. Various implant fixation device embodiments have an engagement element with a concave engagement tip, a guiding element defining a planned trajectory along which the engagement element is configured to move, and an adjustment element configured to move the engagement element along the planned trajectory. Moving the engagement element along the planned trajectory causes the concave engagement tip to enter a bone in a first position and rotate within the bone to a second position. Continuing to move the engagement element along the planned trajectory may cause the concave engagement tip to undergo translational movement from the second position to a third position, thereby pulling the implant towards the bone and exerting compression forces on the bone.

  • Patent number: 10136932
Abstract: Fusion plates and interbody fusion devices have been developed that contain slots to allow the use of pins to position and to guide the placement of the plate while the screws are being secured, reducing the likelihood of improper placement and localization of the plate and screws. The slots contain ridges formed of a plurality of teeth that are configured to engage with corresponding ridges and teeth on the shaft of a distraction pin. After the plate is placed over the distraction pins, the plate is immobilized in the inferior and superior directions and also in the anterior-posterior direction even prior to placement of the bone screws in the plate. Optionally, the pins may be compressed together to apply compression to the vertebra prior to placement of the bone screws.
